Mixing the bath water
62. 29/04/2012 62
63. 29/04/2012 63 Round-ups Which beaker contained the most energy?
If the start temperatures were 13 ºC and 59 ºC, what would the mixed temperature be?
When you mixed, was any energy lost?
What if I mixed 200 cm³ at 20 ºC with 100 cm³ at 40 ºC ?
64. Explanation: Follow-up When the cold water and the hot water are mixed, the thermal energy in the how water passes into the cold water.
This causes the hot water to cool down. The hot water is losing thermal energy.
It also causes the cold water to warm up. The cold water is gaining thermal energy. 29/04/2012 64
65. Explanation: Follow-up The final temperature will be somewhere between the temperature of the hot water and the temperature of the cold water.
When we did the test, we expected the result to be 27 ½ °C because this is half-way between the two starting temperatures.
However, the final result was 26 °C which is 1 ½ °C lower than expected. We think this was because some of the heat transferred into the cold glass of the beaker. 29/04/2012 65
