Robber Barons and Captains of industry • John D. Rockefeller- controlled 90% of oil refining business • Andrew Carnegie- industrialist, philanthropist, and entrepreneur of steel companies while donating to educational foundations • Jay Gould- prototype for robber baron, and railroad king, stirred up most enmity • Cornelius Vanderbilt- railroad empire expert and son inherited his $95 million once he died
Responses to Industrialization • Big debates over business processes in America were : • Whether capital came from exploitation or from patience and frugality • Whether fortune was the result of schemes or strain of high economic forces • Whether men of wealth and power were allowed to use their riches as they wish or if they should be taxed to support of the greater good
American responses • 1879 - "a widespread feeling of unrest and brooding revolution." • Violent strikes and riots overcame the nation through the turn of the century.
