2st IT STAR Workshop: Universities and the ICT Industry (UNICTRY '07) 26 May 2007, Rome, Italy UNIVERSITIES AND ICT INDUSTRY IN SEARCH FOR INNOVATIVENESS Prof. Dr. Cene Bavec cene.bavec@guest.arnes.si www2.arnes.si/~bavec
Basic premises • University - ICT Industry relation is much more than just “joint projects” • We focus too much on industry’s short term motivations in relation to universities • University – industry relation is considerably influenced by governments • The strategic role of innovativeness is underestimated on majority of European universities
Conclusions • Industry’s pragmatic objectives in relation to universities are innovations(they can buy it through joint projects) • Industry’s strategic objectives in relation to universities are innovative professionals(they will rise its “internal” innovativeness) • General innovativeness is shaped predominantly on the university level of education • Quest for innovativeness is not limited to S&T graduates • Innovativeness is based on personal capacity and social environment (therefore, governments’ role is not limited to stimulation of university-industry cooperation – they should also promote innovative social environment)
Universities - ICT industry • ICT industry needs innovativeness even more than other industries • ICT industry also needs more innovative non S&T professionals
