Managing Multiple Bar Codes • Our basic process, following GSMP… • Gather the needs / business requirements from all user sectors affected (FMCG, Healthcare, internal, and mobile com applications...) • Map the data solutions to the needs / requirements AND our existing standards • Determine what are we missing & what do we have • Consider the appropriate data carrier(s) keeping in mind the operational needs (printing, scanning, etc.) and data solutions (needed capacity, etc.) • Identify the potential solutions that support all sectors (FMCG, Healthcare, internal, and mobile com applications...) • Standardize the solutions then update the General Specifications

Managing Multiple Bar Codes • Our main objectives… • Support all of our members’ business requirement with as few data elements as possible in the bar codes (data carriers) • Enable our membership to have that data in as few bar codes (data carriers) as possible • Make it obvious to consumers, end users, caregivers, etc. which one is THEIR bar code, IF multiple symbols are necessary • Make it obvious to the scanning / imaging machines which bar code is the bar code for application at hand

Managing Multiple Bar Codes • Objective/Scope of the Work Group • Formed to assess the impact of the move toward multiple bar codes on one end-user package to make it easy for humans and machines to use bar code technology in supply chain and mobile commerce applications. • Some examples of the problems that could occur are: • a consumer mobile scanning a code designed for back-end processing • a POS scanner reading a code designed for consumer mobile scanning • hospital users unsure which code to read due to multiple bar codes fulfilling • regional requirements

Managing Multiple Bar Codes • Objective/Scope of the Work Group • The main objectives will be: • To identify potential solutions to support FMCG, Healthcare, internal, and mobile commerce applications and then standardize those solutions • To support all business requirements with as few data elements as possible in the bar codes (data carriers) so our membership will be able to use as few data elements as possible • To support all business requirements using as few bar codes (data carriers) as possible so our membership in order to get that data into as few data carriers as possible • To make it obvious to consumers, end users, caregivers, etc. which bar code on the package is THEIR bar code • To make it obvious to machines which bar code is their bar code of interest

Managing Multiple Bar Codes • Objective/Scope of the Work Group • The output focus is twofold • A standard on which data carrier to use (when and how) looking for the best solution at the global level, independent of current legacy • A standard solution to avoid dual or triple carriers on a package (wherever possible one bar code symbol and not two or more) • Specific deliverables will be GS1 General Specification application standards covering: • Types of GS1 data carriers (bar codes) that should be read (mobile phones, POS scanner, portable scanning data terminals , etc.) • What data is encoded in the bar codes • How information is retrieved based on attributes encoded • Specifications for placement on products (size, color, location, etc.)

Managing Multiple Bar Codes • Where we are going… • A “Call To Action” for the Managing Multiple Bar Codes GSMP Work Group has issued • Kick-off meeting (teleconference) will be Wednesday, 05 August 2009 at 11:00 to 12:00 Eastern US • Goal is to bring Mobile COM, Retail, Healthcare, Internal ID Users together with the MO’s to research the issues & needs and build a global, cross sector solution • Get informed and stay connected & involved.. • Respond to the Call to Action to join • Actively participate in the MMBC Work Group effort • Help gather and provide feedback on requirements • Support local and global initiatives for development and adoption in and out of the GS1 sphere
