Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) Ranae Ricci, Jessica Tupy, Andrea Weidling
What it is? • Small cysts on the ovaries • Also called Stein-Leventhal syndrome
What are the causes? • They are unknown • They think genetics could play a factor
Affects • Menstrual cycle • Ability to have kids • Hormones • Appearance
Symptoms • Infertility because no ovulation occurs • Infrequent, absent and/or irregular periods • Increased hair growth on face, chest, stomach, back, thumbs, or toes • Cysts on the ovaries • Acne, oily skin or dandruff • Weight gain or inability to lose weight • Male-pattern baldness (high levels of androgens)
Symptoms • Patches of skin on the neck, arms, breasts, or thighs that are thick and dark brown or black • Pelvic pain • Depression • Fatigue • Sleep Apnea
Problems? • Hormone imbalance • Androgens • Insulin • Cardiovascular Disease • Death Rates • Just miscarriages not the mothers
Diagnose • Medical History • Physical Exam • Pelvic exam • Blood tests • Vaginal Ultrasound
Treatment • No cure • Lifestyle Modification • Birth Control • Fertility Medications
What occurs in the body • When the follicle starts to develop it may not develop all the way so ovulation does not occur. • Some follicles remain as cysts on the ovary • Since the follicle doesn’t develop completely, progesterone doesn’t get produced and then the women’s menstrual cycle is irregular or even absent.
If become pregnant, now what? • High rates of: • Miscarriages • Gestational diabetes • Pregnancy-induced high blood pressure • Premature delivery • Big Baby ( 9 pounds)
After Menopause • Excessive hair growth and male pattern baldness and thinning of the hair gets worse • Having PCOS increases the risks of heart attack, stroke and diabetes
India • Obese women are having a harder time at conceiving a child • 90% of women suffer • 2 main reasons • Unhealthy eating habits • Sedentary life style
Social Struggles • Manly Appearance/Self Esteem • Reproduction • In Vitro Fertilization • Birth Control • Anxiety/Depression • Inability to lose weight
Ethical Implications • Birth Control • In Vitro Fertilization • Not following a traditional family setting
Question? • Should women be covered by insurance companies if they want to receive In Vitro Fertilization? • Birth control is one of the main methods of controlling the symptoms. Should women be looked down upon by their religion and the older generations? • Adoption is becoming more socially accepted. Should other forms of obtaining a family also become accepted?
