About the book • This book is about Katy Carr, who intends to be beautiful and beloved and as sweet as an angle one day. For now though, her hair is forever in a tangle. Her dress is always torn and she doesn’t care at all for being called “good”. Then a terrible accident happens and Katy must find the courage to remember her day dreams and the delightful plans she once schemed; for when she is grown up she wants to do something GRAND!

Facts about Susan Coolidge • Susan Coolidge was a writer from Ohio. She was born into a famous and respected family. After the American civil war (during the civil war she served as a nurse) she turned to writing. Her first book was published in 1871.

Katy’s family!!! Katy has five siblings • Clover ( next in age to Katy) • Elsie ( always left out of the older ones games) • Dorry • John • Phil • Cecy (not actually in the family but a next door neighbour, spends most of her time with The Carrs)
Katy’s Family • Katy lives with her Dad and her Aunt Izzie. Her Dad works so hard so that if the children are not at school they will stay with Aunt Izzie. When Katy was 8, her mother died, this is why Aunt Izzie looks after them. The children do not like Aunt Izzie very much.
What Katy Likes and dislikes • Katy loves playing outside on sunny days, but on a rainy day, her and her siblings will go to their garden shed and make up pieces of drama. Katy is always happy to enjoy the company of her brothers and sisters. Katy hates darning with Aunt Izzie and other girly things.
Paradise • Paradise is the fields and the woods at the end of their garden. The children would go and play in the woods and the fields. In the woods they would make up fairy stories and find lots of different paths to the top of the hill. They gave the paths names and they would debate what path to use each day. On sunny days they would have their picnics on the top of the hill.
The series There are two other books in this series. They are called “what Katy did next” and “what Katy did at school”. They are about more of Katy’s adventures
