Registration & Grading • Register with Cotter • Spring 2019: ESM 402A (4 units) • Register with your faculty advisor • Fall 2019: ESM 402B (4 units) • Winter 2020: ESM 402C (4 units) • Spring 2020: ESM 402D (2 units) • Spend 10–12 hours/week on Eco-E Project. • Try to balance workload across quarters. • A grade of B or better is required in all of ESM 401/402 • Not every team member necessarily gets the same grade!

Team Meetings • Meet at least once weekly as a team • Do not meet at 11:00 – 12:00 on weekdays • Designated student meeting spaces: • Visitors Center - business hours • Manzanita (BH 4329) - business hours • Bonsai (BH 4402) - all hours • Students (not advisors) schedule meetingsand reserve meeting rooms • Reserve meeting rooms on Google Calendar • Email scheduling@bren.ucsb.edu • if student rooms are booked • to reserve media equipment
Computer Work Stations • One computer station assigned per group in BH 3330 or BH 1011 • Tentative move-in date: Mon, May 13
Project Funding • Each team has a budget of $1,300 • + $200 for printing. • Most projects can be done on this budget • FM schedule meeting with Bren Financial Manager Bridget Mastopietro • learn financial procedures • obtain Project Code (Fund Number)
MVP Funding • Each team has a budget of $1,500 • This additional funding for Eco-E Projects is for development of Minimum Viable Products (MVPs) • Funds will be available at the beginning of Fall quarter 2019 • Made possible by EEAC and other donor contributions to Eco-E
Gifts • All gifts coordinated by Director of DevelopmentGift overhead is 6% • e.g., donor gives UCSB $100 ➜ you get $94 • Active fundraising by students without guidance is NOT appropriate • Under NO circumstancesshould you talk to anyone about giving a gift without first speaking with Assistant Dean for Development Lotus Vermeer!
Faculty Advisors • Each team has at least two faculty advisors • Attend ESM 402A and meet with faculty advisors as needed • Your faculty advisors will: • monitor progress • provide technical assistance/expertise • evaluate project • assign grades • Allow at least a week for feedback on anything written • No two advisors alike
Faculty Advisors • During your first meeting discuss: • Expectations • Project scope • Objectives • Meeting schedule • If you have 1 primary Bren faculty advisor: • You MUST add another Bren faculty member (or 0% affiliate) to your external advisory committee (plus one or more industry experts). • If you have 2 primary faculty advisors: • You should select two or more industry experts for your external advisory committee.
Eco-E ProgramFaculty Committee • 2019-20 Eco-E Program Faculty Committee: • Mark Buntaine, Bruce Kendall and Matt Potoski • Will review Lessons Learned Presentation in Spring 2019 and provide written evaluations and feedback
External or Technical Advisors • Each team must engage 2+ external, technical advisors • One additional advisor may be a Bren faculty member • Interact with advisors with absolutely the highest standards of professionalism • When appropriate, invite advisors to: • attend “lessons learned” presentation in spring 2019 • attend defense in winter 2020 & public presentation in spring 2020 • ACKNOWLEDGE them frequently, privately and publicly(if they welcome this)

Human Subjects • For Group Projects, if you are conducting a survey or working with human subjects, you MUST obtain approval (or an exemption) from the Human Subjects Committee (HSC) through the UCSB Office of Research. • Eco-E research does not meet the criteria for human subjects research (i.e., it is not considered a systematic investigation designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge). • IRB review and oversight is not required for Eco-E Projects. • Consider taking ESM 269 Survey Design in Spring 2019 (T/R 9:30-10:45 am) in Weeks 1, 4, 5, 7, 8 • Review Office of Research site: http://research.ucsb.edu/compliance
Non-Disclosure Agreements • If a source will provide you with data that are confidential or restricted, you likely will need a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) • Students may NOT sign an NDA under any circumstances • To prepare an NDA, your source must work with the Office of Technology and Industry Alliances • If you need an NDA, please contact Eco-E Project Coordinator as soon as possible • *IMPORTANT* Students and faculty advisors should NOT receive any confidential information or data from the source until AFTER NDA is fully executed and finalized.
Summer Internships Eco-E Summer Intern Fellowship • Application deadline: April 12th • Subsequent application deadline: May 10th
Other Internship Funding • For low-paying or unpaid internships only • Organization (not Career Team) identifies qualified student for internship. • Application for internship funding is open, apply as soon as you are confirmed to accept a low-paying or unpaid internship. • Students are encouraged to apply as soon as they have received an offer. Faculty Reviews (W20) • Weeks 5-6 of Winter 2020 • Presented to advisor and 2+ other Bren faculty • Opportunity to present and receive feedback from facultyon methods, analysis, preliminary results • Focus on project’s scientific content and proposed business model • Open to all Bren faculty and students • May invite external advisors

Public Presentation • Spring quarter: Friday, April 24, 2020 • General audience, including faculty, students,potential employers, community, and family members • Focus on substance, key findings, and significance • not methods and analyses • Poster session and reception follows
Authorship • ALL team members MUST be acknowledged as co-authors on all deliverables produced by the team • If you plan to publish results: • ALL team members must be invited to be co-authors • Consider inviting your faculty advisor and/or PhD mentor to be a co-author • The only exception is when ALL team members agreeto a specific additional requirement for authorship • e.g., 2 units of ESM 596 in Spring 2020 • In this case, some team members may elect not to be co-authors.
Problems • Students have primary responsibility for solving problems • Involve faculty advisors only after thorough efforts by team to solve problems • If serious problems arise (rare), go to Eco-E Project Coordinator or Assistant Dean • Written documentation is essential if an administrative solution is required • Campus ombuds office: http://ombuds.ucsb.edu
Start Doing NOW • Read the Eco-E Project guidelines • Schedule team meetings • Define roles (PM, FM, DM, OM, E, IC) • Start developing your team • learn about each other • do something together • New team members: educate yourself about your project
Satie’s Words of Wisdom • Master’s Project should not be all/overly consuming • Issues with team members/advisor/clients may or may not arise • This is one of the best preparations possible for your future career • The work belongs to ALL team members • Always reference others’ work, data, models • Have fun!
