Office of Academic Appeals & RegulationWeb Site www.leeds.ac.uk/aaandr Our core activities are the resolution and determination of: academic appeals special cases of student progress that fall outside the regulations requests from Schools to curtail the opportunities for a student to progress allegations of cheating, plagiarism and the submission fraudulent or fabricated coursework and academic malpractice student disciplinary cases, both academic and non-academic The Office is responsible for the University Committees whose work it is to investigate and decide these cases. We offer advice and guidance to Schools and individual members of staff on these and related matters. We also give procedural advice to individual students whose case is under consideration. We provide interpretation of and advice on regulations for taught programmes of study, particularly in the context of complex cases or where special provisions are being requested. The overall objective of the Office is the fair resolution of cases within the framework of the processes and procedures of the University.

Office of Academic Appeals & Regulation Range of Penalties – School Level • The School Panel should begin with the most severe penalty that it can impose: zero for the module (irrespective of marks awarded for other components in the module) with the requirement to do a completely new piece of work, which must be of pass standard (40 - Undergraduate and 50 – Postgraduate) on a single occasion only. • When determining the penalty the School Panel should consider the following points: • Level and experience of the student • Percentage of the assessment and the severity of the offence • The student’s explanation and response to the allegation • Any mitigation • See Notes on Penalties (14) - where plagiarism has occurred in the student’s final attempt

7. Office of Academic Appeals and Regulation Written Warning • The non-plagiarised work will be marked with the resultant mark being aggregated with the marks for the remaining components of the module.

Office of Academic Appeals & Regulation • REQUIRED to submit a new piece of work for the Element to pass standard on a single occasion only for a capped element mark • For an ELEMENT MARK of ZERO, 20, 30, or the appropriate pass mark [40/50] • Subject to the student submitting a new piece of work for the element and the submission reaching pass standard, the capped element mark (zero, 20, 30, 40/50), as determined by the Panel, will be aggregated with the marks for the remaining components of the module. • Where all other module assessment requirements have been satisfied (see footnote*), the credits will be awarded. * Although the aggregate module mark may be below the pass mark, subject to all other module components having being completed to at least pass standard (after any resits if applicable) and the student having demonstrated the learning outcomes for the module, the credits will be awarded.

9. Office of Academic Appeals and Regulation • REQUIRED to submit a new piece of work for the Element to pass standard on a single occasion only for a capped module mark • For a MODULE MARK of ZERO, 20, 30, or the appropriate pass mark[40/50] • Subject to the student submitting a new piece of work for the element and the submission reaching pass standard, irrespective of the marks awarded for other components of the module the capped module mark (zero, 20, 30, 40/50), as determined by the Panel, will be recorded for the module. • Where all other module assessment requirements have been satisfied (see footnote*), the credits will be awarded. * Although the aggregate module mark may be below the pass mark, subject to all other module components having being completed to at least pass standard (after any resits if applicable) and the student having demonstrated the learning outcomes for the module, the credits will be awarded.

10. Office of Academic Appeals and Regulation Penalties – Committee on Applications • REQUIRED to repeat the Semester or the Year in its entirety: take the tuition, submit new assessments to pass standard on a single occasion • For CAPPED MODULE MARKS of ZERO, 20, 30, 40/50 except that it must be expected that the module in question will always for zero • PERMANENT EXCLUSION FROM THE UNIVERSITY WITH NO AWARD • Transcript, other than relating to the module in question, issued at the Committee’s discretion together with any comment The Committee can apply any penalty it deems appropriate.
