The Chloroplast • Sunlight is seen as white light but contains all the colors of the visible spectrum (ROY G. BIV) • Chlorophyll a & b – the pigments in chloroplasts that absorb all the colors EXCEPT green • Pigment = substance that absorbs light & energy • Green light is reflected & that’s what we see
The Chemical Reactions – 2 main steps • Light-Dependent Reactions • Chlorophyll pigments absorb energy from sunlight • Transfers energy to Calvin cycle as ATP • Splits H2O & releases O2 & H’s • Calvin Cycle • Uses CO2, H’s, & energy from ATP to build glucose (food!) • Both steps occur in the chloroplast
