LAUC Assembly May 20, 2013 University of California Libraries Systemwide Advisory Structure Redesign
Overview • Current Advisory Structure • Case for Change • Goals of the Revised Structure • Service Lifecycle Development Model • Revised Advisory Structure • Next steps: Implementation Team
The Case for Change We need a model that: • supports systemwide services and the way we work now, via cross functional teams with knowledge of practices such as scholarly publishing, web archiving, rights management, and data curation; • focuses on Council of University Librarians (CoUL) goals and priorities; • supports communication, collaboration, and project management relative to systemwide services; • encourages and advances innovative ideas from anywhere within the structure.
Goals of the Revised Structure • Support UCL shared library services throughout multiple stages of development: strategic planning, design, implementation, operations, and continual improvement. • Promote effective collaboration, communication and project management relative to shared library services across the ten UC campus libraries and the California Digital Library. • Further the priorities determined by the Council of University Librarians and set forth in the University of California Libraries Systemwide Plan & Priorities. http://libraries.universityofcalifornia.edu/about/vision_mission_goals.html
Service Lifecycle Development Model
Strategic Action Groups “SAGs” (3) Service Development Stage: Strategy & Design
Project Teams Service Development Stage: Service Implementation
Coordinating Committee Service Development Stage: Overall coordination, communication
Operations Teams Service Development Stage: Operations & Continual Improvement
Common Knowledge Groups “CKGs” Service Development Stage: Envisioning / Innovation
Next Steps • Implementation Team manages transition from current to new structure • Project plan; timeline • Map current shared services and collaborative initiatives to Strategic Action Groups (SAGs) • Connect current projects with new structure • Define functional areas to be covered by the Common Knowledge Groups • Update UC Libraries web presence
