  13. World Wide Web • A system of interlinked hypertext documents (i.e. websites) accessed via the Internet • This is what you normally think of as the Internet

  14. Internet Explorer The World Opera SAFARI Mozilla firefoxNETscape Tencent traveler maxthon Google chrome

  15. Computer viruses Corrupt data. Usually begin with mean people wishing to do harm to others or steal data.

  16. You can get a virus from running an app (program) or running an attachment to an email. Don’t open files if you don’t know for sure what it is.

  17. Search Engines = Databases. They store data. In this case, keywords & descriptions for every website. EVERY WEBSITE.

  18. Keywords are important words to descript a site. Examples for our website…. Mrs. Oak McMath Computers Classroom website

  19. Safety • Most students aren’t worried about online safety, but they should be • With a name, phone number, or address, people can find you

  20. Name Search • Just typing in the name Mike Cochran and Denton, TX in Google, gave me his home address and phone number • If I click on Map, it will take me to his house.

  21. Maps There’s his house. Sometimes people can see what your car looks like too if it was in the driveway when the picture was taken.

  22. Phone Number • Even if all I had was a phone number, I could still find Mike Cochran with a Reverse Phone Lookup. • I can even see who lives in his house

  23. Phone Number • I could click on Background Report and for a few $$, I could find out: • How much $ he makes • How much his house is worth • Whether he’s ever been arrested

  24. What does this mean? • It means that criminals can easily find you. All they have to do is look. • If you post private information like your address and/or phone number on your Facebook, myspace, twitter, livejournal, etc. accounts for all to see, you are setting yourself up for danger.

  25. How Do I Protect Myself? • Set all accounts to PRIVATE or FRIENDS ONLY • Never post private information online if you can help it • Shred any mail you don’t want that contains private information

  26. Predators • On the Internet, people can and do lie • They can pretend to be who they are not • This means that predators can and do pretend to be 13 years old to get your attention

  27. Predators • NEVER give out personal information to someone you haven’t met in person and don’t know very well • And NEVER give out personal info online if you can help it

  28. E.T. Phone Home • All computers have a special address to identify them called an IP address • People & police can use this address to track your movements online • They can also use it to prove if you have committed a crime online such as piracy or hacking

  29. IP Addresses • Example of an IP Address: 208.84.138.41 • That’smy IP address at my teacher computer here in Denton ISD at McMath MS • People can use online programs like this one http://www.ip-adress.com/ip_tracer/to find you if they know your IP address

  30. IP Addresses NOTE: It knows my machine is in Denton ISD. It knows my latitude & longitude for my location even! Use GPS &…. Scary!
