Cuban Tree Frog • 4 year old, female • Presented formalin-fixed • Part of a zoological collection • Euthanized after a period of anorexia and considerable weight loss • Gross exam: • Emaciated • Diffuse, bilateral corneal opacity Presented at SEVPAC 2008 – Permission granted for use on SEVPAC website only

  3. Histopathology Diffuse expansion of the cornea Acicular clefts Increased cellularity Scattered plasma cells, lymphocytes, and macrophages Presented at SEVPAC 2008 – Permission granted for use on SEVPAC website only

  4. Corneal lipidosis • Documented in dogs, rabbits, swine, multiple amphibian species • Loss of vision frogs and rabbits • Causes: • Trauma • Dietary • Experimentally reproduced • Elevated serum total cholesterol and low-density lipoproteins • Female frogs • No evidence linking to vitellogenesis • Captive frogs on “normal diet” also developed disease Presented at SEVPAC 2008 – Permission granted for use on SEVPAC website only
