Exercises That Should Be Part of Your Self Care TMD Treatment

Obstructive sleep apnoea is also responsible for causing temporomandibular disorder (TMD). It does require a meticulous diagnosis to identify the condition since symptoms such as migraines, back pain, neck pain, tinnitus, and poor sleep could be due to other reasons as well. Once your dentist identifies TMD then you will probably be taught to handle the situation at home since the condition resolves itself with proper care. In addition to the usual at-home treatments, you should also exercise your jaw for faster recovery and in order to recover full movement functions. These exercises should be part of your home TMD treatment plan prescribed by your dentist.

  2. 2 Mouth opening and closing exercise Do this exercise as part of your home TMD treatment. •Open your mouth downwards as far as it will go. You may use your finger to push down your lower mandible as far down as it will go. Stop when you feel pain. •Hold this position for a half minute. •Now gently close your mouth. •Do this at least four times. Repeat the exercise after each meal. Ideally you should do this exercise thrice a day. Jaw glide Practice the jaw glides this way to get relief in TMD: •Open your mouth with your tongue in the normal position. •Count to five. Close your mouth. •Open your mouth a little bit and glide your jaw forward and pull back to normal position. •Do this at least 5 to 10 times. Repeat three times in a day. Sideways movement This is another exercise to try to improve flexibility of the jaw. •Hold your head straight up. •Look to the right by moving only your eyes, not your head. •Next, move your lower jaw to the left. Hold this position to the count of 10. •Return lower jaw to normal position and then look to the left and move jaw to the left. Pencil between teeth exercise •Take a toothbrush or pencil and hold it between your front teeth. •Now slide your lower jaw forward and roll the pencil in your mouth so that it is held between the top front teeth and lower back teeth. Hold position for 20 seconds. •Roll back and forth. •Do five reps. Relaxation exercises The above exercises have to do with the jaw. Now you can try these relaxation exercises. •Sit or lie comfortably. Tense all muscles and then relax them. Do not tense all muscles. Start with feet and proceed upwards. •Inhale in a way that your stomach expands. Inhale slowly, about four seconds. Exhale but do it slower, taking about 8 seconds to exhale. Do this five times at the minimum. Visit Holistic Dental in Donvale to get the best TMD treatments and advice on how to manage this condition for speedy recovery.
