PLAN:Plan Learning by Assessing and Networking Using State Standards and PLC’s to determine what will be taught and assessed Cynthia Price Instructional Math Coach Davis District August 5, 2013
Welcome Let’s PLAN to integrate our curriculum using the following steps:
“PL” is for PLAN LEARNING: • PLAN LEARNING to integrate your curriculum • Every year should begin with a PLAN • Collaborating with a TEAM is most helpful • First: • Know the curriculum you need to teach • Print your State Standards for the topics you teach • Make a list of specific standards that need to be covered in each area of the curriculum • Ex: Science: Earth & Moon, Living & Non-living, Gravity, Heat & Light etc. “INTEGRATE”
“PL” is for PLAN LEARNING: • PLAN LEARNING to integrate your curriculum • From a printed Standards page: • Use the Blank Curriculum Topic/Theme form • Write in major topics and themes • Example of 3rd Grade Plan “INTEGRATE”
“PL” is for PLAN LEARNING: • Write main topics/themes you teach “INTEGRATE”
“PL” is for PLAN LEARNING: • PLANLEARNINGto integrate your curriculum • Transfer the themes onto the monthly blank form • Blank Monthly form • Use pacing guides to determine amount of time for each topic • Month by Month • Main topic/theme/ideas for: • Reading/writing • Math • Science • Social Studies • Health • Art • Include Holidays • Align Months with any specific curriculum you can • Example of 3rd Grade Plan “INTEGRATE”
“PL” is for PLAN LEARNING: “INTEGRATE”
“PL” is for PLAN LEARNING: • PLANLEARNINGto integrate your curriculum • Blank Year at a glance – Week by Week form • Include • # of school days for the week • SEP Conferences • Holidays • Example of 3rd Grade Plan
“PL” is for PLAN LEARNING: • Blank Year at a glance – Week by Week form “INTEGRATE”
“PL” is for PLAN LEARNING: • PLANLEARNINGto integrate your curriculum • You have PLANNED LEARNING for the year • Know that adjustments will be made throughout the year! • Now let’s talk how to access in-depth knowledge about what you need to teach in math – State Standards “INTEGRATE”
“Planning Curriculum” Planning helps you know the curriculum -which helps you know HOW you need to teach “INTEGRATE”
Planning with: State Standards: Core Curriculum Guides & Progressions
“Planning Curriculum” • Core Curriculum Guides - • Conceptual • Procedural • Representational
“PROGRESSIONS” for Teacher Preparation: • Narrative documents describing the progression of a topic across a number of grade levels, informed both by educational research and the structure of mathematics. These documents werethen sliced into grade level standards.
“PROGRESSIONS” for Teacher Preparation: • Show the progressions for specific domains • Explain necessary information and background knowledge for the teachers across grade levels • Helps teachers understand where students came from and where they are going
“ASSESSING” Planning helps you know the curriculum which helps you know WHAT you need to Assess “INTEGRATE”
“ASSESSING” • Backward by Design • Knowing what will be taught helps: • Know what you expect students to learn • Know what you want to assess “INTEGRATE”
“ASSESSING” • Look at the State Standards! • Examples of questions & tasks • How to represent standards • Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract
“ASSESSING” • Collaborate/PLC’s • Talk within your teams • Determine skills/concepts students are struggling with • Talk about different ways each teacher uses to gain student understanding “INTEGRATE”
“ASSESSING” • Collaborate/PLC’s • Teachers who work together to assess student knowledge are better able to increase student knowledge before and during RTI (response to intervention) for students.
Working Toward Mastery PLC’s Collaborate assessing Understand State Standards & Progressions Learning for student mastery Plan & Integrate the Curriculum Growth
Summary • Plan Learning • Know the curriculum you need to teach • Understand Curriculum Guides & Progressions • Learn how to teach from conceptual to procedural to representational • Know where your students are coming from and where they are going • Collaborate with PLC’s/Teams • Assess student growth and help each other with optional ways to help students gain knowledge
