  1. Starter • Using word create a document called desktop publishing, • Copy out the text from exercise 1 and correct all the errors the person has made, • Format the document using the rules learnt a few lessons ago, • Spell check and proof read your work, • Print it out and save into your INTRODUCTION folder using an appropriate name.

  2. 2357 Introduction Topic 2: Lesson 2Desktop Publishers Mr C Johnston ICT Teacher – Sidney Stringer Community Technical College, Coventry (www.computech.me.uk)

  3. Session Objectives • Identify the common features found in desktop publishers, • Identify basic tasks which can be carried out by desktop publishers • Use basic features of desktop publishers

  4. Desktop Publishers • A desktop publisher (DTP) has similar features to a word processor but it has more flexibility in the way text and graphics are laid out on the page, • Each item is called an object and can be easily moved about the page, • You can create objects in different packages and combine them together with the DTP, • Objects can be shrunk, stretched, flipped, rotated, put on top of one another (layered) or grouped together, • A common DTP is Microsoft Publisher, • Quark and Adobe Illustrator are examples of more powerful DTPs

  5. Differences Between a Word Processor and a DTP • To create text in a DTP we need to place it in a text box - in word processors we generally just type the words straight in, • The spell checker in a DTP only works for the text box you are working on – a word processors spell checker tests the whole document, • Thesaurus and grammar checkers are often found in word processors but not DTP software, • Some word processors will automatically check and correct spelling errors – this is not normally found in DTP software, • DTP software has the facility to layer objects so that pictures can be placed behind text,

  6. Differences Between a Word Processor and a DTP • DTP software has the ability to group, flip, rotate, shrink stretch objects traditional word processors don’t allow you to do this, • Text boxes can be linked together so the text flows from one to another across one page or many – this is very useful when setting out pages with columns or multiple pages, • Desktop publishers have extra features to help you design layouts of documents or select a pre-designed layout of a document.

  7. Uses of A DTP • DTP software is commonly used to produce: • Newsletters, • Business cards, • Brochures, • Flyers and posters.

  8. Some DTP Interface Features

  9. Today’s Task • Your teacher will demonstrate some of the features of a DTP package, • Using DTP software create a poster advertising the presentation rules learnt a few lessons ago for display in the ICT room, • Copy and paste the rules from the word processed document you typed to save time, • Ensure you only include relevant pictures within your work.
