Copy Transform combine Research PowerPoint Katie McCamley
Introduction Nothing is new. Everything is a remix. Throughout this PowerPoint I will be attempting to analyse and understand a variety of my favourite scenes within Film and TV. Scenes that have stuck in my head, and mean a lot to me personally. Throughout this year, my understanding of how watching and consuming Film can help to shape and inform the way in which I create has increased dramatically. I am now able to understand that watching Film, influences my creation of it. This is why thinking about and talking about scenes that have influenced me most throughout my life is so important, as it is going to shape what I want to create

Beauty and the Beast (2016) • Why this scene? The first scene that automatically comes to mind when thinking about my favourite scenes within Films has to be a Disney Film. Disney has been a part of my life for longer than I can remember. Everything about it, from the incredible animation, to the morals surrounding the stories and the memories that come with them. One of my favourite Disney Films of all time has to be Beauty and the Beast, every element: the stunning animation work; the beautiful story and the memories that come with the Film for me personally. Due to this, I will overwhelmed with excitement at the announcement of a live action remake of the Film. After loving the live adaptation for the Film, one of my favourite scenes from the original stuck out in my head. This is the scene where Belle runs up onto the hill singing the reprise of ‘Belle’ after Gaston asks her to marry her. The scene itself ( that actually has a lot of resemblance to that of a similar scene within ‘The Sound of Music’ ) has always stuck out to me and it a scene that I would like to think about in greater detail.
What the scene involves and why it resonates with me: • During the reprise of the song ‘belle’ we see Belle running up the hill with passion and motivation. I love this scene specifically because of the incredible shots of scenery throughout the scene. We have a tracking shot around Belle as she sings out as loud as she can. The overwhelming beauty of nature within the scene is truly magical, and throughout this we also understand how small the village is that Belle lives within. • Shots and moments that stand out to me: • The shot above stands out to me significantly. As we get closer and closer to Belle, we are able to see all of the emotions in her face, helping the audience to understands how much meaning the words she are singing have within them. I feel as though this could be something I could use within a scene of my own, as I feel as if understanding the character to this level is really important, as it adds another layer of depth and relatability to the audience
Colour correction: Another thing that I love about this scene is the beautiful colour correction. Within the scene I assume that it is late afternoon and evening, and we get to see a beautiful sky, full of blues and pinks and reds. The yellow flowers on the hill look to have been saturated and enhanced, as they stand out and are noticeable to the audience. Everything within the scene is even, and the continuity of colour throughout the scene is incredible. This is something that I will keep in mind when creating my Production. Music within the scene: The final thing that really stands out to me within this scene is the music within the scene. The reprise of the song ‘Belle’ within Beauty and the Beast has always been my favourite version of the song in the original version of the film. I feel as though the words have such a strong meaning, and they have been portrayed with such passion that the scene becomes emotional and powerful. I feel as though this could be used in some way within my own production, be this by using background music within my scene, or even just by using a voiceover within the production.
Matilda (1996) Another Film that came to mind almost immediately when thinking about Films that have influenced me and made me think is Matilda. When I was younger Matilda, and other books by Roal Dahl, were my favourite books. When I got slightly older and found out that there was a Film of this book, I went straight to Blockbuster with my Dad and rented the film. I feel as though Matilda means such a lot to me because of the fact that it has been part of my life for so many years. My all time favourite scene from this film has always been the pancake scene. Throughout this scene, we see Matilda growing to the age of four in just a few moments, and her cooking for herself after her mother and family leave to go to work and bingo. There are a variety of different reasons that this scene stands out to me so much, and it is something that I want to discuss in greater detail.
The idea of a montage: One of my favourite things about this scene is the layout behind the scene. I love the fact that this scene is a montage, as it gets across such a large variety of content in a short period of time. I believe that this is something I am really interested in, as a montage of clips together really does help to show the development of a character and to speed the story along somewhat. It helps keep everything within the scene fast paced and interesting to an audience. Close up shots: Another really interesting element of this scene that has always appealed to me is the close up shots. As the narrator says “overtime, she developed a sense of style”, we see two close ups (shown in the images both above and to the left). These two shots help to visually represent specifically what the narrator is saying, whilst also remaining visually interesting to the audience.
The music within the scene: One of the most memorable elements within this scene is the music (Rusted Root – ‘Send Me On My Way’). It feels as though I have known the lyrics to this song my whole life. Whenever I hear it I think of Matilda and Pancake Day. It is such a happy, positive song to put with such a bittersweet story of a young girl finding her rightful home. I honestly think that the music and audio within a movie is one of the most important elements, as it not only can set the tone of the movie, but can help to tell a story to the audience of the Film. Childhood: As I mentioned before, Matilda is a book that I have loved for years before I ever even saw the movie, and so watching the Film left me feel even more elated and positive than before. This scene not only showed that Matilda was intelligent, but also helped to show that Matilda is a strong young girl, and has grown up much faster than many children have to. This makes us fall in love with the character of Matilda even more in such a short space of time.
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971) Why this scene? The next scene that came to mind when thinking of scenes that have influenced and affected me is a scene from the film ‘Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory’ (1971). From the use of colour and shots to show scenery, all the way to the Actors involved and Childhood memories, this Film is one of my all time favourites. I think that it has already influenced my Film making, and I feel like there is a lot more that I can learn from it
Music within the Scene: Just like in ‘Matilda’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast’, the music within this scene is something that is really important to why this scene was so memorable to me. The song in the scene (Pure Imagination) is such a beautiful song that always seems to make me cry. The child like innocence of Willy Wonka within the scene helps to show an older audience that it is okay to let out your inner child and that everything around us is already beautiful, specifically the lyrics: ‘If you want to view paradise Simply look around and view it Anything you want to, do it Wanta change the world? There's nothing To it’ Scenery: The incredible and iconic scenery within this scene is so memorable. The slow shots to show as much of the scenery as possible is really well done. I am often used to trying to use lots of quick shots to make up my scene, but I feel as though these shots are really effective, and allow the audience to take the scenery in that so many people wanted to see within the film.
Childhood Memories: As I discussed when talking about Matilda, I have always loved Roald Dahl. Because of this, I have found it really easy to pick out scenes that stand out in my head, as ‘Charlie and Chocolate Factory’ was also one of my favourite stories. I think that having some sort of childhood connection to something really helps you to connect to it on a deeper level, as before even watching the Film you have a connection with the story or something surrounding it. Gene Wilder: Gene Wilder has always been one of my favourite Actors of all time, from ‘Stir Crazy’ (1980) all the way to ‘Silver Streak’ (1976) Wilders work has always inspired me. But the first Film I ever saw of his is the one I am reflecting upon now. His seamless version of Willy Wonka is not only accurate to how I have always imagined him, but is such a memorable and well acted role of his.
La La Land (2016) La La Land, released in 2016, is honestly one of my favourite Films of 2016. The absolutely stunning cinematography, heart wrenching storyline and stunning music captured my heart, and because of the many nods to other, classic musicals, it already feels like a classic in itself. Damien Chazelle’s use of copy transform and combine has been used with such grace and talent, that the Film has stayed with me until now.. The theme of love: The theme of ‘love’ is a significant throughout La La Land, and the beautiful and yet tragic love tale that is told throughout the movie is something that I really loved to watch. The scene that I have chosen to look at more closely within La La land is the summer montage scene This scene shows Mia and Sebastian at the best time within their relationship, and shows them having the time of their lives. This scene was a joy to watch, and therefore is one of the scenes that has stood out to me most throughout the Film.
Beautiful shot composition: I clearly remember watching this film at the Cinema for the first time and being captivated by the incredible cinematography and shot composition throughout the film. In the ‘Summer’ section I have picked to analyse, we see a variety of different shots to show Mia and Sebastian’s relationships developing throughout the summer months. These beautiful shots, including the shot to the left and below and the other screenshots throughout this section, show just a small minority of the shots within La La Land that have impressed and inspired me to care about every single shot within my production Colour palette: As shown by the shot on the right, the incredible colours throughout the Film are stunning. Throughout La La Land, and in this scene more significantly, naturally occurring beautiful lighting has been used and enhanced to create a the most beautiful scene possible. I love the use of warm tones within the shot on the right, as the pinker tones suggests love and beauty, just like the relationship on Mia and Sebastian at this point in the movie. I have been trying to develop my own personal skills in colour correction throughout this year, and I hope to continue to develop my skills in my own production.
Montage: The beginning of the ‘Summer’ scene that I have chosen is a montage of moments meant to show the positive development of the relationship between Mia and Sebastian. As I discussed when looking into the Matilda scene, I really love the use of a montage within a film to develop a story and to keep the audience interested and entertained. I feel as though this scene does a really good job of this, as we understand that, at the time, this relationship is going really well. The music within the scene: Like a lot of the previous scenes I looked at, this scene also has a strong element of music within it. This use of a background music in the genre of Jazz throughout this scene is used not only to work as a positive soundtrack to represent the development of the characters relationship, but also to show and backup Sebastian's love for Jazz.
Similarities between the scenes: • Music within the scenes: One of the most obvious similarities between all of these scenes that I have discussed is the fact that each scene has some sort of noticeable music within it. For example, in ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’ there is someone actually singing within the scene, and in the other two Films, there is background music and no other speech within the scene. • Montage: Another common similarity that I have noticed through the films I have analysed is the idea of a montage. For instance, in ‘La La Land’ and ‘Matilda’ in the scenes that have stuck out the most within those two movies have been montages. I think that this is really going to influence my production. • Gorgeous scenery: The next noticeable similarity throughout the scenes I have picked is the use of nature and scenery to create incredible shots: In ‘Beauty and the Beast’ we see Belle running up a hill and looking out upon her village; in ‘La La Land’ we see a Montage of incredible shots including a beautiful sunset and in ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’ we see the inside of the gorgeous Factory. • Colour Correction: The colour within ‘La La Land’ and ‘Beauty and the Beast’ is something that has really inspired me to keep trying to develop my knowledge when it comes to using colour correction to improve the overall look and outcome of a production. • Childhood memories: Finally, another similarity between all of my scenes accept ‘La La Land’ is childhood memories. I have realise over the last year and bit that this is something that really affects my what Film and TV I love to watch and remember.
Montage: I have definitely been inspired by the idea of doing a more montage like scene, I will be taking elements from both ‘La La Land’ and ‘Matilda’. Childhood Memories: I will try to use the idea of childhood memories within my Production. I think I will try to use a shot of an old story book, or the shot of an old film, just to help to make the story more relatable to my audience Music within the scene: I will be using music within my scene to convey emotion, and to keep my audience engaged within the scene. IDEAS MINDMAP Colour Correction: Like ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and ‘La La Land’, I will be using colour correction to make the scene more aesthetically pleasing to the audience, and to enhance the natural beauty of the locations I will be filming within. Scenery: As ‘Beauty and the beast’, ‘La La Land’ and ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’ has done and I will be using Locations that are already natural beautiful, and try to enhance them in some way.
