Purpose of my research For my media studies coursework we are tasked to make a music magazine. I had to do research on my target audience so that i could understand what my target audience wants and what they like to see to make the magazine appeal to them. The aims of my research were to greater understand what they would want to see from a music magazine so that it would appeal to them and make them buy it. The way i carried out my research was by making a questionnaire and asking five people the twelve questions i had prepared.
Methods and techniques To do my research i made a questionnaire. the questionnaire contained twelve questions to help me understand what my audience like and what they don’t like. i used a mixture of closed and open questions to get a good idea of what they like. The closed questions let me see patterns in the people i asked. The thoughts and opinions found in the open questions let me see exactly the kinds of things people would want to see in the magazine. I used this mix of questions because it gave the best overall result which i could then move forward with and use to make the best magazine possible which appeals to its target audience well.
Research dataPersonal These results are all showing those related to the audience of the magazine. It shows that the majority of the people i asked were male. The question for age ranged showed that everyone i asked was between 16 and 18. i also asked the occupation and that showed that everyone i asked was a student with out any other job.
Research data Purchasing preferences These results show the kinds of magazine habits my target audience already have. it shows that they like existing magazines like NME and Q. i also shows that they would prefer a magazine to come out once a month. It also shows me that they prefer to buy magazines from supermarkets
Research data Feature preferences I asked my focus group what they would like to see as the main feature. they put an interview as there favorite. In joint second was biographical account and news feature. i also asked what kinds of artist they would like to see in the magazine. they said artists like: Take That, bruno mars, Ellie Goulding and Rhianna. i also asked what kind of color scheme they would like to see on a pop music magazine. they said pastil colors as well as blue red and white.
Summary i found out that most of my target audience would prefer to have a magazine ased around the current format of Q or NME meaning that i will look to those kinds of magazines to help me make mine. the questionnaire also helped me find out other characteristics in my target audience like what features they want to see in the magazine. i also know the areas in which they live so i can then get adverts that are focused at that area making the magazine more appealing.
Conclusion In conclusion i think it has been beneficial to do primary research as it has given me a far better understanding of my target audience and what there likes and dislikes are. i feel that i have fulfilled my aim and purpose of making a questionnaire which were to better my understanding in my target audience so i can make the magazine more suitable for them. i think that it was effective to carry out my questionnaire because it makes it easier for me to make my magazine tailored to my target audiences likes. a down side to doing this is that the focus group i had may not reflect the views of everyone so my results may not be completely correct and i still might not make my magazine completely to my target audiences liking.
Proposal From my research i have decided that i am going to add a few more things than i had initially planned like adverts aimed at the area that my target audience lives in. i also know what main feature i am going to have in my magazine. i am also going to change the color scheme of my magazine to that which was said by my focus group which was pastil colors because this is what they want to see in a pop music magazine.
