  1. THE SOLAR SYSTEMBY HARRY AND CHARLIE POTTS

  2. CONTENTS • The Sun • Mercury • Venus • Earth • Mars • Jupiter • Saturn • Uranus • Neptune

  3. The Sun • The gigantic ball of hydrogen and helium, which is known to the human race as the Sun, is responsible for the seasons (Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.) , heat and life on Earth. • The planets of our solar system all orbit the Sun at a different rate, which gives each planet a certain amount of days in a year depending on how fast it orbits the Sun. • The Sun has many layers that leads to the inner core, which include: The Corona, the atmosphere which is made of plasma, extends millions of kilometres outwards and has a hotter temperature than the surface of the Sun. The Photosphere is the visible surface of the Sun. It has a temperature of 5530 Celsius, which isn’t as hot as the atmosphere. The chromospheres is a thin layer, which sits just above the photosphere and is approximately 1240 miles long. In this region of the Sun, solar flares and sun spots are visible to the naked eye. The radioactive zone is pack with electromagnetic radiation from the inner core, which is estimated to make up around 45% of the Sun. The inner core generates most of the Sun’s fusion power , which is as large as 25% of the Sun’s radius.

  4. THE SUN BY NUMBERSLESS THAN 5% OF THE STARS AROUND THE MILKY WAY GALAXY, ARE AS BRIGHT OR AS LARGE AS THE SUN.1 MILLION EARTHS WOULD FIT INSIDE THE SUN.498 SECONDS IS HOW LONG IT TAKES FOR LIGHT TO TRAVEL FROM THE SUN TO THE EARTH.IT WOULD TAKE A 100 BILLION TONS OF DYNAMITE DETONATED EACH SECOND, TO MATCH THE ENERGY PRODUCED BY THE SUN.

  5. Mercury a small, dense, extremely hot planet, due to the fact that it is the closest planet to the Sun. Before now we have known only very little planet, but after recent discoveries we’ve uncovered the secrets behind this microscopic planet. Every planet is unique, however Mercury is on a whole different level, as it can be scorching hot on one side of the planet, whereas the other side of the planet it’s incredibly cold. Compared to our home planet Earth, Mercury is still amazingly small as it would fit into the Earth about 3 times. The surface of Mercury has a range of different landscapes, which varies to where you are on the planet. On some parts of the planet the rock is simply smooth, whereas other areas are jam –packed with craters that can often have a diameter of up to 500 miles. MERCURY

  6. MERCURY BY NUMBERS IT TAKES 59 EARTH DAYS FOR MERCURY TO REVOLVE AROUND THE SUN. MERCURY IS 2ND DENSEST PLANET IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM AFTER EARTH. MERCURY HOTTEST TEMPERATURE EVER RECORED IS 427 CELSIUS. ON MERCURY THE SUN APPEARS TO LOOK 2.5 TIMES BIGGER THAT IT WOULD LOOK ON EARTH. MERCURY IS ONE OF THE FEW PLANETS WHICH HAVE ZERO MOONS.

  7. Venus, which is often referred as Earth’s evil twin. This is due to the fact that Venus is the most Earth-like planet in the solar system. Despite this there are a few key differences between these remarkably similar planets. To start with, Venus is an extremely hot planet, capable of melting lead. It also has clouds like Earth. However they are made of acid, which could kill a human on the spot. On the other hand, the two planets (Venus and Earth) are still very similar , the Earth’s diameter is very similar to Venus’, as it’s just 650 kilometres larger compared to Venus’. Further more, Venus has the green house effect just like our planet Earth. But Venus has reflective clouds, which prevents all the carbon dioxide to escape the planet ; making the planet warmer. VENUS

  8. VENUS BY NUMBERS • IT TAKES 225 DAYS FOR VENUS TO ORBIT THE SUN. • 450 CELCIUS IS THE MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE ON VENUS. • THERE ARE MORE THAN 1000 VOLCANOES ON VENUS. • 38 MILLION KILOMETRES IS THE CLOSEST VENUS GETS TO EARTH.

  9. When astronomers and scientists explore and try and find out things about the solar system, they often don’t think about the Earth. Despite this, Earth is the only planet known to support life in the universe. Many astronomers have a theory that when the Earth was still in magna form a huge meteor crashed into it; causing the Earth to tilt on its side. After the impact, a large chunk of the planet broke of the Earth and started orbiting the Earth. Now we call that chunk of rock the Moon. The main reason that us humans can live on Earth is because there is liquid water on the planet ,which enables us to drink and keep hydrated. This is now a key factor to finding live on other planets. Earth

  10. EARTH BY NUMBERS • HAWAII MOVE 10CM TOWARDS JAPAN EACH YEAR. • IT WOULD TAKE 17 DAYS AT 100 KMH TO DRIVE AROUND THE WORLD. • IN 5 BILLION YEARS THE SUN WILL BECOME A RED GIANT AND IT’S LIKELY IT WILL DESTROY THE EARTH.

  11. MARS Earth’s neighbour, Mars, which is the forth planet from the Sun, is the red planet that is believed to once have been like Earth. Mars is estimated to be around half the size of Earth and has three different layers, which include: The crust that is thicker than Earth’s which is especially unusual due to the fact that Mars is smaller than Earth. Further down there is an area of lava which makes a lot of the volcanoes erupt at the same time. Last of all there is the core. Like Earth’s it’s made of mostly iron and nickel. However it doesn’t generate a magnetic field which makes it vulnerable to solar flares and meteors.

  12. MARS BY NUMBERS MARS HAS 2 MOONS. A YEAR ON MARS IS 687 DAYS LONG. IF YOU WERE ON MARS YOU COULD JUMP UP TO 3 TIMES AS HIGH THAN YOU WOULD BE ABLE TO ON EARTH. MARS ORBITS THE SUN AT 14.5 MILES PER SECOND.

  13. Jupiter Now were on to the gas planets, enormous balls of gas held together by a small core that’s about the size of Earth. These planets can become hundreds of times bigger than the rocky planets. ( Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars.) Jupiter the biggest planet in the solar system and the fifth planet from the Sun, is named after the king of the Roman gods. This is because it violent storms as well as being the biggest planet. Jupiter is well known because of its giant red spot. However this spot is hasn’t always been there. This is because the is actually a gigantic storm about the size of Earth. Although it’s a gas planet, it still has a atmosphere and this atmosphere has 4 layers, which include: The stratosphere, which is made up carbons like hydrogen and methane. The haze layer which is made up of water vapour, ultraviolet radiation and methane from the stratosphere. The troposphere which is an area made up of clouds of water. And last of all, the gas layer. This is where the temperatures get lower and the pressure gets stronger. This is also known as the surface of the planet.

  14. JUPITER BY NUMBERS 1321 EARTHS COULD FIT INSIDE JUPITER. THE GALLIAN MOONS OF JUPITER, WERE THE 1ST TO THINGS IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM TO BE DISCOVERED BY USING A TELESCOPE. IF YOU WERE ON JUPITER YOU WOULD WAY 2.4 TIMES HEAVYER THAN YOU WOULD ON EARTH.

  15. SATURN Saturn, the second largest planet and the sixth planet from the Sun, is often described as the jewel of the solar system, due to the fact of its beautiful appearance and its sunning rings. Saturn has over 50 moons, however its three major moons (Mimas and Titan.) are very spectacular. Mimas has one extremely coincidental feature, it looks like the Death star from star wars. Moreover Mimas has a huge crater which is approximately 84 miles wide. Titan, the biggest moon that orbits Saturn is even more remarkable than the last because of it’s atmosphere. This is very strange because moons don’t normally have an atmosphere. Additionally scientist belive that this maybe be able to sustain life.

  16. SATURN BY NUMBERS EVERY 14 YEARS, SATURNS RINGSSEEM TO DISAPEAR. THIS JUST SHOWS HOW THIN SATURNS RINGS ARE. SATURN IS 2 TIMES AS FAR AWAY FROM THE SUN THAN JUPITER IS. SATURN IS THOUSANDS OF TIMES BIGGER THAN EARTH.

  17. URANUS Uranus is located on the outskirts of the solar system and is often thought that it is a dark, cold, characterless world. Due to the fact that we have now got the equipment to find out a whole lot more about this amazing planet. Uranus has 4 different layers, which include : the core the rocky center of the of the rocky planet, which is believed to be made of ice, rock and metal. The mantle is the icy fluid that surrounds the core, it is mainly made of water and methane. The atmosphere outer gas layer of Uranus, which is up from hydrogen and helium. Last of all the clouds ,Uranus has lots of clouds which are made from water, methane and hydrogen.

  18. URANUS BY NUMBERS ITS TAKES 84 YEARS FOR URANUS TO ORBIT THE SUN ! WIND SPEEDS CAN REECH UP TO 250 MILES PER HOUR. IF YOU WEIGH 45 KILOGRAMS ON EARTH YOU WOULD WAY 40 KILOGRAMS ON URANUS.

  19. Neptune Neptune is the furthest planet from the sun and is the second coldest planet. Little was known about this mysterious planet, until the spaceship Voyager II discover so much about it. Neptune has seasons like Earth, however these so called seasons are a lot longer. In fact they tend to last for about 40 years. Furthermore, the whether is a lot more extreme. E.G- Neptune has been having lightening storms for over 20 years. Last of all, we’re going to tell you about the layers, that’s very fascinating, which are : the atmosphere that is made of mostly hydrogen and water vapour. The mantel, which is made up of methane, water and ice. Finally the core, that is about the size of Earth, is made of nickel, iron and rock.

  20. NEPTUNE BY NUMBERS NEPTUNE’S GRAVITY IS 17% STRONGER THAN EARTH’S. NEPTUNE RECIVES 1/900TH OF THE ENERGY THE EARTH RECIVES FROMTHE SUN. IT TAKES 164 YEARS FOR NEPTUNE TO ORBIT THE SUN.
