MODERNIZED DEMOLITION INITIATORS (MDI) (051-193-1002) (051-193-1004)
INTRODUCTION • "ON TODAY'S BATTLEFIELD, ONE OF YOUR MANY MISSIONS AS A CAVALRY SCOUT MAY BE TO USE AN ARRAY OF HIGH EXPLOSIVE DEVICES TO CREATE OBSTACLES AND TO DELAY OR CHANNEL THE ENEMY INTO ENGAGEMENT AREAS. THE TRAINING YOU RECEIVE HERE TODAY WILL AID YOU IN YOUR ABILITY TO DESTROY BRIDGES, MAKE ROADS IMPASSABLE, OR TO FALL TREES IN A PATTERN (ABATIS). USING MODERN DEMOLITION INITIATOR TO FIRE DEMOLITION CHARGES WILL ENABLE YOU TO ACCOMPLISH THESE MISSIONS. FAILURE TO APPLY THESE SKILLS WILL CAUSE INJURY OR DEATH TO YOURSELF OR FELLOW SOLDIERS, ULTIMATELY CAUSING FAILURE OF YOUR MISSION".
Construct a Nonelectric Delayed Initiating/Detonating Assembly • The basic materials consist of M14 time fuse with blasting cap, M81 igniter, and explosives. • The minimum safe distance, when in the open, is 300 meters for explosive which are between 1 and 27 pounds.
Construct a Nonelectric Delayed Initiating/Detonating Assembly • The minimum safe distance when not in the open is figured by walking at a normal pace to an area which will be clear of the charge when detonated. The distance is largely dictated by terrain. Factors to be considered is the amount of gravel or stones in the immediate vicinity of the charge, abrupt changes in elevation in the immediate vicinity of the charge, large trees and boulders, buildings, etc.
Inspecting M81 / M14 • Inspect the M81 igniter: • Check for dents cracks or chips. • Ensure safety pin is locked in place. • Ensure time fuse adapter plug and shock tube adapter plug are present and secured in M81. • Inspect M14 Time Blasting Fuse: • Inspect fuse for cracks or loose powder. • Check blasting cap for dents, loose powder, and ensure cap is secured to fuse.
Insert Blasting Cap into C-4 • Make a hole in C-4 large enough to accommodate the entire blasting cap using a stick or similar material. • Insert M14 blasting cap into hole of C-4. • Mold the C-4 around the fuse at the top of blasting cap. WARNING: ONLY APPLY ENOUGH PRESSURE TO MOLD THE C-4.
Insert Blasting Cap into TNT • Use a sharp knife, razor blade, etc to cut 1/2 inch and metal seal from free end of M14. WARNING: YOU SHOULD MAKE SURE YOU WEATHERPROOF THE CUT END OF THE M14 IF THE CHARGE WILL REMAIN FOR ANY EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME. • Pass the non blasting cap end of the M14 through the slit in the priming adapter with the threads pointed towards the blasting cap.
Insert Blasting Cap into TNT • Pull the cap into the adapter until the blasting cap is seated into the adapter. WARNING: DO NOT APPLY PRESSURE TO THE BLASTING CAP. • Place the blasting cap and adapter into the hole of the TNT. • Screw the adapter into the TNT.
Attach M14 Fuse to M81 Igniter • Turn M81 end cap 1/2 turn counterclockwise. Do not completely remove. • Remove both shipping plugs from the igniter. • If using C-4, cut 1/2 inch and metal seal from free end of M14 IAW step (5B), (a) • Insert fresh cut end of fuse in the space created by removing the shipping plug. • Tighten cap clockwise to sufficiently to hold the fuse in place.
Detonate the Charge. • Place a black leather field glove or similar type glove on either hand. • Grasp barrel of M81 with gloved hand. • Remove safety pin. • Grasp pull ring and push in then pull out to ignite fuse • If fuse fails to ignite, push plunger all the way back in and pull out. If fuse still does not ignite replace igniter or light with a match.
Note • If a M81 is not available, the fuse can be lit by splitting the rear end of the fuse and placing the head of an unlit match in the powder train and lighting the match.
Construct a Nonelectric Initiating/Detonating Assembly. • The basic materials consist of: M11 Blasting Cap/Shock Tube, M12 Transmission Line, M81 igniter, M9 Holder (if needed) and explosives. • The minimum safe distance, when in the open, is 300 meters for explosive which are between 1 and 27 pounds.
Inspect M11 Shock Tube • Inspect fuse for cracks or loose powder. • Check blasting cap for dents, loose powder, and ensure cap is secured to fuse. • Inspect M12 Transmission Line in the same manner as M11. • Note: The M9 and M12 holder can hold up to 5 shock tubes.
Insert Blasting Cap on M11 into C-4. • Make a hole in C-4 large enough to accommodate the entire blasting cap using a stick or similar material. • Place blasting cap into hole of C-4.
• you must also remove the “J” hook. WARNING: YOU SHOULD MAKE SURE YOU WEATHERPROOF THE CUT END OF THE M11 IF THE CHARGE WILL REMAIN FOR ANY EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME.
Connect M11 Shock tube to M12 Transmission line • Place the M12 Transmission Line blasting cap into flap end of M12 holder, use an M9 holder if M12 holder is not present, and lock flap down. • Make a small loop on non blasting cap end of the M11 Shock Tube. • Place loop into large flap end of M12 or M9 holder and lock down flap. M12 and M9 holders can hold up to 5 shock tubes.
Attach M12 Transmission Line to M81 Igniter • Turn the M81 end cap 1/2 turn counterclockwise. • Remove only the smaller shipping plug from the igniter. • Use a sharp knife, razor blade, etc to cut 1/2 inch and metal seal from free end of M12. • Insert fresh cut end of fuse in the space created by removing the shipping plug. • Insert free end of transmission line. Push and turn shock tube into igniter as far as it will go. • Tighten cap sufficiently to hold the transmission line in place.
Detonate the Charge • Place a black leather field glove or similar type glove on either hand. • Grasp barrel of M81 with gloved hand. • Remove safety pin. • Grasp pull ring and push in then pull out to ignite fuse.
