The 6 Strategies • X-Ray and predict the text- Figure out what kind of writing it is so you know what you need to pay attention to. • READ- One time through without stopping. • (Reading #2) Circle important words- Words you do not know. Uncommon words that are repeated. Use the dictionary if you need to. • Underline main claims- Underline the most important information to the meaning of the text. • Summarize each paragraph- In 2 or 3 words. • Summarize the whole- In 1 sentence.

  3. #3 Circle Important Words Mark the unknown words and the uncommon words that are repeated. Use context and the dictionary to understand their meaning.

Context and the Dictionary CONTEXT DICTIONARY Fancy- (noun) 1) The power to use the imagination. 2) Liking something, taking a “fancy” to something or someone. 3) Showy, decorative. • “Of course, for most of the time, there were few challengers to baseball’s preeminence. Other professional team sports, such as football and basketball, had not yet caught the fancy of the sporting public.”

Context and the Dictionary CONTEXT DICTIONARY Bullpen- (noun) 1) A large cell where prisoners are held until brought into court. 2) A place on a baseball field where relief pitchers warm up. 3) The relief pitchers on a team. • “Baseball uniforms hide nothing, so the players are easy to recognize during the game, whether they are on the field, in the bullpen, or in the dugout.”

  6. Summarize (Steps 5 &6) Each paragraph in 2-3 words The whole article in one sentence. Write one sentence about the main idea of the article. “The writer says (insert main idea) by arguing/showing/stating that (insert the supporting arguments).” • You must reflect the main idea of the paragraph. • You must reflect the support in the paragraph. • Ex: The first paragraph of “Has the Time Passed…” • Baseball isn’t boring/outdated.
