Celebration and History of Shri Krishna Janmashtmi Celebration and history of Shri Krishna Janmashtami: Shri Krishna Janmashtami is the Hindu festival celebrated every year on Krishna paksh ashtami of Bhadrapada month according to the Hindu calendar. The day is also known as gokulashtami, saatam aatham, rohini ashtami etc. Janmashtami is the celebration of Lord Krishna's birth that was eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. Dahi-Handi and Raas-leela are the main traditions of celebrating this festival. For more information, visit: http://top10tale.com/ History of Shri Krishna Janmashtami Lord Krishna was son of Sri Vasudeva and Devki who was sister of Mathura King Kansa. On the day of Devki's marriage there was an akashvani that Kansa will be killed by eighth son of Devki so Kansa putted Vasudev and Devki in prison and started killing all their infant child waiting for her eighth child to come who was suppose to bring his death. On Krishna Janmashtami Lord Krishna born in the same prison but that day somehow Vasudev managed to save Krishna and left him in Nandgaon where his friend Nand Baba and his wife Yashoda had a daughter whom Vasudev brought to the prison. In the memory of Lord Krishna's birth and all these incidents the day is celebrated.

Rituals of Janmashtami: Fastingfor the whole day of Saptmi by devotees is performed because it's believed that the fast is for protection of Lord Krishna in the jail of his maternal uncle and at 12 of midnight (the time when Krishna was born) the idol is bathed and adorned with clothes and jewellery. Ladies draws child foot prints with rice flour paste walking towards their house expecting a child like Lord Krishna in their house. Dahi Handiis the main tradition of Janmashtami celebration. A team of youth makes human pyramid and breaks the high hanging handi filled with butter. At many places Dahi Handi is a competition where different youth teams participates and whoever breaks the Handi is declared to be the winner. Raas-leelais very popular tradition in Brij area. Here it is performed often in temples and ashrams but on the day on Janmashtami it's very popular. It's believed that Lord Krishna use to play raas with Gopis so the trend of Raas-leela is popular. Centers of Celebration: The main centres of Janmashtami celebration are Mathura and Dwarka. Lord Krishna was born and brought up in Mathura, Vrindavan, Gokul, Nandgaon so these are the main attractions of this celebrations. He ruled from Dwarka so that too is an important place of celebration. Except these places this festival is performed with very enthusiasm all over the country.
