  1. When I get logical, and I don't trust my instincts - that's when I get in trouble.

  2. Lesson for Today Review of minterm and Maxterm Writing of minterm and maxterm expansions in truth table K Mapping 2 and 3 variable positioning assignment Rules of Simplification ( K Map Grouping ) Grouping Example Multiple and Illegal Grouping POS and SOP Minimization using K Map Quiz 4 variable notation approach ( No slides Mode )

  3. Minterm and Maxterm Expressions

  4. Definition Amintermof n variables is a product of the variables in which each appears exactly once in true or complemented form. - Each minterm = 1 for only one combination of values of the variables, = 0 otherwise

  5. a maxterm of n variables is a sum of the variables in which each appears exactly once in true or complemented form. Each maxterm = 0 for only one combination of values of the variables, = 1 otherwise

  6. All possible minterms and maxterms are obtained from the truth table:

  7. W H A T N E X T The Karnaugh map • K-map for short • Maurice Karnaugh's1953 • refinement of Edward Veitch's 1952Veitchdiagram • a method to simplify Boolean algebraexpressions permitting the rapid identification and elimination of potential race conditions. And • provides a systematic (and graphical) way of performing this operation

  8. Optional 2 Variable Direct . . .

  9. Seat Work Exercise ( 5 minutes ) • Find the minterm and maxterm notation of the following • Draw K Map illustration to validate truth table.

  10. In 3 Variables K map there are three possible Positioning assignment.

  11. Example # 1 Plot positioning assigment and determine the maxterm and minterm of the given table below.

  12. Rules of Simplification K – MAP Grouping Other K – MAP Grouping

  13. Example # 2 • Draw the truth table of the given expression below • Plot positioning assignment • Draw K mapping • Find the Minterm and Maxterm Notation • Group K Map
