  2. Nationalism • After War of 1812 growing sense of Nationalism in the U.S. • Chief Justice John Marshall made decisions that increased the power of the federal government • Secretary of State. John Quincy Adams establishes foreign policy guided by nationalism

  3. Nationalism – the belief that national interests should be placed ahead of regional concerns or the interests of other countries

  4. Priorities of John Quincy Adams: • National security • Expansion of U.S. territory

  5. How did John Quincy Adams achieve these goals? • Rush-Bagot Treaty 1817 • Convention of 1818 • Adams – Onis Treaty • Monroe Doctrine

  6. Group Work • Each group will be assigned a reading • As a group, take notes on the assigned reading • The group will then teach their information to the rest of the class

  7. Rush-Bagot Treaty 1817 • reduced Great Lake Fleets to few military vessels • led U.S. & Canada to demilitarize their common border

  8. Convention of 1818 • Fixed U.S. border at 49th parallel to Rocky Mountains • Joint occupation of the Oregon Territory for 10 yrs

  9. Adams – Onis Treaty (1819) • Spain ceded Florida to the U.S. • Gave up claims to Oregon territory

  10. Monroe Doctrine • Three main concepts • Separate spheres of influence Europe and Americas • Non-colonization of newly independent colonies in western hemisphere • Non - intervention of U.S. in European affairs
