NOUN • A common noun is a person, place, thing, or idea. • A proper noun is a noun that names a particular person, place, thing, or idea. • Some common nouns would be: A football, a bat, a baseball, and a stick. • Some proper nouns would be: The X60 hockey stick, the Reebok Ostick, the New England Patriots.

  3. VERB • A verb is a word used to express action or a state of being. • There are two types of verbs, action and linking verbs. • Action - May express physical or mental action. Some action verbs are: run, swim, jump, and dangle. • Linking – Links or connects the subject with a noun, pronoun, or an adjective in the predicate. Some linking verbs are: is, was, am be, and been.

  4. ADJECTIVE • An adjective is a word used to modify a noun or a pronoun. • Some sentence examples of adjectives are: The huge lineman wrecked the quarterback. The fast runner stole second base. The lazy player did not hurry to get back on defense.

  5. ADVERB • An adverb is a word used to modify a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. • Some examples of adverbs used in sentences are: • The running back quickly ran in to the end zone for a touchdown. • Scalabrine totally missed the basket by a couple of feet.

  6. PREPOSITION • A preposition is a word used to show a relationship of a noun or a pronoun to another word in the sentence. • Examples of prepositions: • Doug Flutie threw the hail mary pass down the field. • The attack player ripped the behind the back shot into the net.

  7. PREDICATE NOMINATIVE • A predicate nominative follows a linking verb and explains or identifies the subject of the verb. • An example is: • Kobe Bryant is a basketball player who balls hard.

  8. Predicate Adjective • A predicate adjective is an adjective that follows a linking verb and describes the subject. • A sentence for predicate adjective is: • The golf ball is white and round.

  9. CONJUNCTIONS • A conjunction is a word used to join words or groups of words. • And, but, or, for, so, and yet are all conjunctions. • Some examples are: • Brian Scalabrine is in the NBA but, he is terrible so he doesn’t start.

  10. PRONOUN • A pronoun is a word used in place of a noun or more than one noun. • You, her she, everybody, I, who, themselves, it, and no one are all pronouns. • An example of a pronoun is: • Paul Pierce made the basket. • He made the basket.

  11. DIRECT OBJECT • A direct object is a noun or a pronoun that receives the action of the verb or shows the result of an action. • An example of a direct object is: • Steve took a spill when he tried to skate. • Took – verb • Spill – direct object

  12. INDIRECT OBJECT • An indirect object is a noun or a pronoun that comes between the action verb and the direct object and tell to what or to whom or for what or for whom the action of the verb is done. • An example is: • Chara ruined the small kid on the ice.

  13. INTERJECTION • An interjection is a word used to express emotion. • An example is: • “YAAAAA”, the crowd screams as the fighter gets a K.O.
