Our LMS Evaluation Process LMS’ Chosen: • Desire2Learn (D2L - CSULB) • Canvas • Moodle
How we evaluated the sites Categories used: • Synchronous Collaboration/ Communication • Asynchronous Collaboration/ Communication • Ease of Use • Accessibility
Desire2Learn - Asynch Communication E-Mail Pros: • File attachments • Masks e-mail addr. jesse.santana.248EC6D485F4K0@beachboard.csulb.ed Cons: • HTML Editor • Opens up in a new window
Desire2Learn - Synch Communication LiveRoom Pros: • Real time chat • Drawing canvasjesse.santana.248EC6D485F4K0@beachboard.csulb.ed Cons: • Open in a new window • Requires Java to be installed
Desire2Learn - Ease of Use Navigation Pros: • Intuitive top down design • Navigable with and without style sheets jesse.santana.248EC6D485F4K0@beachboard.csulb.ed Cons: • Embedded media support issues (SSL)
Canvas: Sync communication Conference/ Live chat pros: • more intuitive • fast boosting takes<1min. cons: • requires java scripts, wai-aria, and html5
Canvas: Asynchronous Email pros: "skip to content" link at the top of every page that will bypass all site and course navigation cons: inbox/ keyboard users could not select a user to send to,archive or delete messages, and could not display a thread of messages
Canvas: Ease of use Calendar Pros: • intuitive • Does not use color alone to distinguish the importance of a visual element. cons: • poor navigation sequence • In feedback area insufficient contrast with grey back ground
Moodle: Synchronous Communication Pros: • Provides real-time interaction • Archive of chat sessions/ not private Cons: • Editor toolbar is not fully keyboard accessible • No shortcuts for all buttons, e.g. create link, insert image etc.
http://uxmastery.com/ Moodle: Asynchronous Discussion Board Pros: • Configurable display formats • Ease of Use Cons: • Text overlaps • Color used for emphasis
http://uxmastery.com/ Moodle: Ease of Use Pros: • Collapsible tree structure similar toWindows Explorer • Major section headings are “dockable” (see screenshot) jesse.santana.248EC6D485F4K0@beachboard.csulb.ed Cons: • Users complain that it is not as intuitive as other management systems on the teacher/admin side • Its open source, community driven, nature means accessibility is a catch up game (like Wordpress)
Our Recommendation: 1) Canvas 2) Desire 2 Learn 3) Moodle
