  3. Crown Competition Factor The percentage of an area that is covered with a vertical projection of tree crowns.

  4. Steps in calculating CCF: • 1. Associate crown width of open grown trees with their diameter • CW = f (d) • example: Assume a linear relationship • cwi = a + b di • di = diameter; a,b are parameters • 2. Calculate the maximum crown area (in square feet) of each tree on one acre of the subject stand • MCAi =  {CW/2}2
