Booker T. Washington1856-1915 • Born a slave • Educated at Hampton University • Founder of Tuskegee University
The Atlanta Compromise • BTW gave speech at the “Negro Pavilion” • Urged southern blacks AND whites to “cast down your bucket where you are.” (1) • "In all things that are purely social, "he said, "we can be as separate as the fingers, yet one as the hand in all things essential to mutual progress.“ (2)
B.T. Washington’s Plan • Blacks should not blame whites for their situation • Blacks should start from the bottom and work up • Build economic base with farming/industry • ACCEPT Jim Crow: work for economic opportunity • Civil/political rights NOT as important as economic opportunity • Developed programs for job training & vocational skills (3)

DuBois's Plan • Wrote “The Souls of Black Folk” where he criticized Washington’s approach • “The problem of the 20th century will be the color line.” • Demanded immediate equality • Blacks should get educated • Advocated the Talented Tenth • Black doctors, lawyers, intellectuals (5)
NAACP • Founded by 60 people - 7 African American (DuBois, Ida B. Wells) • Goal was to secure for all people the rights guaranteed in the 13th ,14th and 15th amendments • First president was a white lawyer • DuBois directed Publications and Research • (6)

Choice Assignment – 20 pointsYou may perform for 20 points extra credit • Option #1 - Create a Venn Diagram detailing the differences between the two intellectual leaders. Use this to juxtapose their positions in your chorus and versus and take a stance on which one you agree with. • Option #2 – Create an identity chart for Booker T. Washington OR W.E.B. DuBois. Your chart should detail words, phrases and pictures that would describe and give information about them. Next, use this information to create your poem/song.
