THE KNOWLEDGE ECONOMY The knowledge economy places a premium on ideas, requiring a skilled and educated workforce, capable of innovation to spur the economic growth of nations. The knowledge economy has placed an increasing importance on human capital cultivation not only for our students, but for teachers, administrators, and schools as well.
What Does Business Need? • New employees are good with digital tools • Many have rarely been in situations where they have to use knowledge and skills to create a product of value • Lots of ideas, but need more remedial training than in the past Source: Science April 19, 2013
What Can Business Do? • Advocate for more student exposure to hands-on problem solving activities • Help sponsor such activities • Create more internship opportunities to expose students to real world work and learn about jobs • Support initiatives to question, and limit digital activities that divert students from other real world activities Source: Science April 19, 2013
