Final Project Reminder . . . • Final Project Abstract (~a paragraph in length) and AnnotatedBibliography (10 sources, of which at least five are print) are due on Friday, October 17, 2014. • Your abstract should contain your film, how you will examine it, and what you hope to show with your examination. • NOTE: Final Project Abstract and Annotated Bibliography Work Session in class on Friday, October 10, 2014

German Unification – Political Cartoons • While viewing the following cartoons, make a list of the following . . . • What indications do these cartoons give of the reasons for East Germany’s collapse? • What concerns about the division and unification of Germany are portrayed in this series of political cartoons? • Do any of them dovetail with the evidence of East Germany’s decline showcased in Die Architekten?

  5. GoodBye Lenin! (2003) • Directed by Wolfgang Becker, one of the founding members of X Filme Creative Pool (along with Dani Levy and Tom Tykwer of Lola renntfame). • The lead – Alex Kerner – is played by Daniel Brühl whom you may recognize from Quentin Tarentino’sInglorious Bastards and now from Ron Howard’s Rush. • The film’s story spans from October 7,1989 – i.e. the official celebration of East Germany’s 40th anniversary – to the official unification of Germany in October 1990.

  6. A few cultural points of clarification . . . • Die Sandmännchen– East German childrens’ television program. • Mikhail Gorbachev – last head of state of the USSR serving from 1988 to its collapse in 1991. He was known for his reform policies – Glasnost (i.e. great freedoms for the Russian people, including greater freedom of speech) and Perestroika (i.e. economic restructuring). • Sigmund Jähn = the first German astronaut in space. • 1990 – The Federal Republic of Germany won the World Cup Soccer Tournament.

  7. Clarifcation of terms for reading Brockmann’s “Good Bye Lenin! (2003) or Farewell to the Socialist Motherland” • Ostalgie = Ost + Nostalgie • Heimat = home country, homeland, native country • Aktivist/in = an activist . . . in a socialist sense.

  11. Lyrics versus Images • Scene: An architects’ collective is born – Handel’s Messiah (“Unto to Us a Child Is Born”) (Note: Handel was born in Halle, Germany, in 1685. Geographically . . . he “belongs” to East Germany. ): Handel's Messiah. • Question: What’s the purpose of this scene? How does this scene use music and images to achieve this? What does it say about the potential for change in East Germany at that time?

  12. MeineHeimat . . . • This following is accompanied by the song “MeineHeimat”/ “My Homeland” = a popular song sung by the FDJ. Lyrics by Herbert Keller and music by Hans Naumilkat: MeineHeimat. (NOTE: Mistranslation in subtitles. It should read “our homeland” without the word “new.” • Question: What’s the purpose of this scene? How does this scene use music and images to achieve this? What does it say about the potential for change in East Germany at that time?
