In the jungle of management, leaders must be as adaptable as chameleons. They should be in a constant state of self-awareness all the while reacting to ever-changing environmental and organizational demands. Leaders must have the ability to listen and take calculated, well-intentioned steps towards organizational goals. As chameleons can rotate and focus their eyes separately to observe multiple objects simultaneously, so must managers. This allows them to observe an entire situation before making a judgment about it.

The Art of Management-Melea Rose Waters Every experience, even the bad ones, teaches you something about leadership. Sometimes the worst experience can be the most valuable lesson. Be open to it. Knowing when to speak and what to say is just as important as knowing when to stop talking and just listen. Pay attention to the sentiments of those you serve. As a leader, surround yourself with people who challenge you, who bring something to the table other than their area of expertise, and who are willing to give 100 percent. It’s easy to be a leader when things are going great. A leader shows his or her true abilities when times are tough. Be kind. Be open. Be willing to give criticism with kindness, and accept it with an open mind. And smile. As a leader you may be challenged without merit. Be willing to listen to both sides, even if you don’t agree with them. Learn from your mistakes and be willing to change if something isn’t working. Know that as a leader you will be the one who ultimately must live with your decisions. Inspire others. Laugh. Don’t forget where you came from or who you are. If you don’t like who you are or who you’ve become, change it. Look to those you care about for inspiration and motivation. Walk like a man, butlead like a woman.
