Kumar, University of Connecticut, DMR 0604815 A • Novel, DNA-based hybrid inorganic biocatalysts are synthesized for the first time. • The DNA-enzyme complexes are intercalated in layered a-Zr(HPO4)2H2O (A-C) in a facile manner. • These catalysts show high enzymatic activities and strong promise for the construction of robust biosensors and economic production of biofuels. a-Zr(HPO4)2H2O B C Intercalation of Enzyme/DNA complexes, after exfoliation of a-ZrP stacks with tetrabutyl ammonium hydroxide (TBA). Novel Bioactive Enzyme-DNA-Inorganic MaterialsChalla V. Kumar, University of Connecticut, DMR 0604815 • Education - Several graduate and undergraduate students were trained in state-of -the-art biomaterials research. • Undergraduate Research - Three Chemistry Interns were trained in Inorganic Materials Research during summer 2007. • High School outreach- Under the Mentor Connection Program at UCONN, four high school students (Nimi Vora, Phil Kong, Orla Kerr and Janessa Rodreguez) spent three weeks in our laboratory, during summer 2007, synthesizing novel inorganic biomaterials. • Participated in ‘Kids are Scientists Too’ summer program for elementary school children.
