Safety in the lab • Reminder of (forgotten) procedures • General rules • Problems Work safely = Work cleanly = Work accurately
‘Small accidents’ • 2-Cyclohexene-1-one • Balance • Gloves + rinsed • 24h => Anti-gif, doctors • Flammazine • Infection => antibiotics + corticoids • Hyperpigmentation + allergy?
Experimental design • Start with risk analysis form • http://www.biw.kuleuven.be/ifc/cok/intern/forms.htm • Obligatory!Checked by supervisor! -> printed copy to Ivo Vankelecom • Find information atwww.kuleuven.ac.be/sapredir/gevaarlijkestoffen • Catalogen, boeken • Limit quantities • Use safest possible chemicals (ethanol, octane, toluene!)
Safety spectacles + lab coat • ALWAYS!
Lab tables • Space/clean

Waste disposal: 1.Needles • Do not place back needle cap! • Remove needle with red lid of yellow plastic box • Syringe in contaminated waste
Waste disposal: 2. GC-vials • Remove from tray after analysis!

Waste disposal: 3. Pasteurpipettes • Contaminated waste
Waste disposal: 4. Product bottles • Rinse + dry + remove cap • Lab 02.92 (new) • Write down (also when bottle remains used!) Plastic bottles+ glass bottles Broken glass

Dust masks • Whenever powders • Special gas masks:outside labs (mind filter colour!) • CO!
Gloves • Whenever needed • Green rubber!
Warnings (reaction tags) • Use special formshttp://www.biw.kuleuven.be/ifc/cok/intern/forms.htm • Remove them afterwards!
Dish washer • Duty list: Remind eachother ! • Use rubber gloves • No ‘spuwpotjes’ • Glassware should be precleaned: • NO scrubbing machine • NO products left
Centrifuge • Leave it clean!
Miscellaneous I • Never work ALONE in the lab! • Gas connections: check leaks! • Tap connections • Fume cupboard lab book • Respect eachother’s set-ups • Respect reservations (forms!)
Miscellaneous II • HF: written authorisation! • Avoid ovens to evaporate • Report defects (lab responsible, technician, supervisor) • Liquid nitrogen (gloves!) • Storing samples (ask lab responsible, technician, supervisor) • General lab cleanings
Ordering of chemicals • Forms on website (http://www.biw.kuleuven.be/ifc/cok/intern/forms.htm) • Send e-mail to responsibles • Chemicals: • Consult database! (p:/COK workers/Product Database/db3 -> lievegina) • Internal blue numbers: • cellar • empty bottles

Emergency procedures • Call 22222 (not 100!) • Fire: 1. Call ‘Fire!’ If people around: -> 2 If no one around: activate alarm, then -> 2 2. 1 attempt to exstinguish the fire (time!) 3. Call 22222 4. If successful: wait for rescue team If not successfull: - activate alarm - go to ‘verzamelpunt’
Evacuations • Continuous siren (+/- 5 min) >< test or automatic detection of fume,…= short pulse (3 seconds) -> meant to activate EIP (first intervention team = Hugo + Johan M.) -> they have 3 minutes to decide ‘accept’ (-> continuous siren -> general evacuation) or ‘decline’ (-> silence) • Switch off electric equipment • (PC, printer can remain switched on) • Leave lights on • Bring experiments in a ‘safe’ mode • Close windows and doors • Leave the building (take jacket, wallet, bag,…) • Do not use the elevator! • Go to reunion point (in front of main entrance of the building) and await further instructions
