Safety in the Lab • I am mean for a reason • I have a very good safety record for my over 15 years of teaching • I will not tolerate any carelessness or goofing off • Your behavior will determine how much we do in the lab
Safety in the Lab • If you are goofing off and cause an accident – you are in big trouble • You will have to pay for anything that is damaged – which could be very expensive • For example, goofing off and causing an acid spill that damages the table, carpet and floor. It would all need to be replaced. • You will also face disciplinary action • You may also suffer from the guilt of knowing that you hurt a fellow student
Safety in the Lab • To get the most out of the lab, you need to be well prepared for the experiment. • Read the lab carefully • Complete the pre-lab questions BEFOR lab • Be responsible for your safety and the safety of others • Always note the safety precautions • know which chemicals are dangerous and why
Safety in the Lab • Wear safety goggles – you will be told when to put them on and when you can take them off. • Watch your clothing. • Shoes must be worn • No loose clothing or jewelry • Conduct only assigned experiments • No ‘experimenting on your own’ • Only work when I am in the room
Safety in the Lab • Know where the safety equipment is • Eye wash station • Fire extinguisher • Emergency shower • Fire blanket • Fire alarm • First aid kit • Be sure you know how to use it
Safety in the Lab • Do not eat or drink in the lab. • Never taste any chemicals • Be careful to keep your hands away from your eyes and mouth when handling chemicals • Wash your hands with soap and water at the end of the lab • Read all the directions before beginning, and reread each instruction before you do it
Safety in the Lab • Notify me immediately if any chemicals are spilled – time is important! • Report all accidents, no matter how slight • Tie back long hair, especially around open flames • Do not leave a lighted burner unattended • Use a hot plate instead of an open flame when using flammable liquids
Safety in the Lab • Read the label on a reagent bottle carefully before using the chemical. After removing the chemical from the bottle, check to make sure that it is the correct chemical for that procedure • Never return chemicals to the reagent bottle – it will contaminate it • Instead, it should be placed in another container – supplied by me.
Safety in the Lab • Never place a used spatula or dropper into a reagent bottle. • Instead, pour some out into another container • Do not use chipped or cracked glassware. • Return it to me • When diluting an acid, always pour the acid slowly into water. (NEVER pour water into an acid
Safety in the Lab • When heating a liquid in a test tube, turn the mouth of the test tube away from yourself and others • Clean up spills and broken glass immediately - notify me first! • Leave your work area clean. • Check the desk surface to be sure there are no chemicals on it.
Safety in the Lab • Thermal burns – use common sense • If the burner was just on – it will be hot • Chemical Burns – these could be serious • They do not always burn right away • C– corrosive • I - irritant
