Ergonomics “… is the science of using proper motion, posture, and equipment to ensure people are sitting or working in a way that will not cause injuries.” But how does this relate to us?
Ergonomics in the Computer Lab For us, ergonomics is the difference between pain and comfort in the lab.
Your chair should be well padded and fully adjustable. Make sure the monitor is at arm’s length away from you. Make sure that the screen is square to your line of vision. Keep your feet flat on the floor and close together. Posture Your arms should be at a 90° A wrist pad for rest. Lighting
Proper Posture Isn’t Everything Even if you follow the 8 steps of ergonomics in the computer lab, injuries can happen. How? …Spending excessive amounts of time in front of the computer without doing anything else.
Injuries and Prevention • Muscle and joint (posture) injuries …Proper posture reduces the risk of most RSIs, but limit the amount of time spent in front of a computer. …Take frequent short breaks and go for a walk or perform stretching exercises at your desk. Stand often. • Overuse injuries of the upper limbs …Most common in the elbow and wrist/hand. …Use your whole arm, not just your wrist, when using the mouse. …Type lightly, don’t pound on the keyboard. …Avoid long, uninterrupted stretches of typing, removing hands from the keyboard when not actively typing. Eyestrain …Use indirect light to prevent squinting …Eliminate reflection and glares, while reducing the contrast and brightness of your screen. …Frequently look away from the screen and focus on faraway objects. …Visit the optometrist for eye examinations regularly.
