Explanation of Assistive Technology • Assistive Technology is an umbrella term that includes assistive, adaptive, and rehabilitative devices for people with disabilities and also includes the process used in selecting, locating, and using them. • Often abbreviated as AT, assistive technology is any item piece of equipment, software, or product that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities.
Laws regarding Assistive Technology • IDEA 2004 (20 U.S.C. 1400 (c) (5) (H)) requires IEP teams to consider the assistive technology needs of all children with disabilities. • IDEA 2004 (20 U.S.C. 1400 (c) (5) (H)) defines an assistive technology device as…. Any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of a child with a disability.

Assistive Technology for disabled learners • Open LORE Read Software takes an e-library of downloaded books and converts text to speech. The program reads aloud and visually tracks each word as the sentence moves along. Users can also type a passage or input text from another document to be read aloud.
Assistive Technology for physical disabilities • Switch Access- If an individual can move one part of their body, they can use an adapted switch to access the computer, an iPad, an AAC device and other devices. Switches can also be utilized for mobility. There are Bluetooth options for switches, as well as direct connect switches. There are also sip, puff switches available.
