  2. Why Emergency Lighting • In case of event which make a power cut, Emergency Lighting must provide enough light in order to: Guarantee clear marking of emergency exits Facilitate the safe evacuation of people Help to localise fire alarm and first aid devices Guarantee a minimum light level to avoid panic by occupants and enable activities to continue

  3. Synthesis of EN standard • Market hold by EN regulation and possible local deviation: • Chance to pull up market (technology / price) connected to safety market • Schneider Electric is fully aligned with this approach. > EN 1838For the E.Lightingapplications rules > EN 60598-2-22For the E.Lighting product design > EN 50172For the E.Lighting maintenance and test procedures

  4. EN Standard EN 1838: Applicationrules

  5. EN1838: Application rules EN1838 Emergency lighting Safety lighting for escape routes High risk area Lighting Anti-Panic area

  6. EN1838: Application rules Escape routes > Facilitate the evacuation of buildings > To help the emergency services Anti-panic > To keep people quiet High risk area > To avoid accidents especially in production plants, building construction... Types of applications • 3 sub-categories for Safety Lighting:

  7. EN1838: Application rules Escape route • Standard EN 1838 says: • If Escape routes wider up to 2 m, luminaries must be installed to ensure a minimum level of lighting (1 lux) on the floor along the central line of the escape route.

  8. EN1838: Application rules Anti-panic area • Standard EN 1838 says: • For anti-panic area, luminaries must be installed to ensure a minimum level of lighting on the floor until 0.5 m from the wall.

  9. EN1838: Application rules Escape Routes Escape Routes Escape Routes Anti-panic Anti-panic Example 1/3 • Example of Escape Route and Anti-panic area

  10. EN1838: Application rules Escape Routes Anti-panic Example 2/3 • Example of Escape Route and Anti-panic area

  11. EN1838: Application rules Chemical process Example 3/3 • Example of High Risk Area: Production Plants, workshops

  12. EN1838: Application rules Photometric rules • Lumen: lighting flux unit or lighting power • Lux: flux received per unit area of the illuminated element.1 lux = 1 lumen / 1 m²

  13. EN1838: Application rules Escape routes > 1 lux Anti-panic > 0.5 lux High risk area > 15 lux 0 m Parameters - Lighting level • On the floor level:

  14. EN1838: Application rules Exit indication

  15. EN1838: Application rules Parameters - Safety signalling • d: observation distance • p: pictogram height • s: 100 for signs externally lluminated 200 for signsself-illuminated d = s x p

  16. EN1838: Application rules Parameters - Safety signalling • Internally illumated signs • Externally illumated signs

  17. EN1838: Application rules Luminescence ratio between the 2 colours at a distance of 15 mm compared to the separation line of the 2 colours Frame 10 mm not included in the measurement Sign luminescence Background luminescence Luminescence measurement of the signs

  18. EN1838: Application rules Location of the luminaires

  19. EN1838: Application rules Location of the luminaires • At each Door

  20. EN1838: Application rules Location of the luminaires • Signs are required whenever the direction of escape is ambiguous

  21. EN1838: Application rules Location of the luminaires • Near changes of direction

  22. EN1838: Application rules Location of the luminaires • Near each flight of stairs

  23. EN1838: Application rules Location of the luminaires • At each change of floor level

  24. EN1838: Application rules Location of the luminaires • Near each intersection

  25. EN1838: Application rules Location of the luminaires • Near each Fire Alarm call point - fire fighting equipment

  26. EN1838: Application rules Location of the luminaires • Near first aid posts • But: • First Aide Site, Fire fighting equipment and call points should be more lighted than escape route, when not located on an escape route not located on an escape route or in an anti-panic area.

  27. EN1838: Application rules Location of the luminaires • Over High Danger Areas

  28. EN1838: Application rules Location of the luminaires • Over Technical Areas

  29. EN1838: Application rules Location of the luminaires • Outside each final exit

  30. EN1838: Application rules 0.5 Lux 0.5 Lux 1 Lux 0.5 Lux 0.5 Lux

  31. EN1838: Application rules

  32. What type of product to be used depending on the need: • Anti-panic area Luminance to provide the right luminous flux at the ground level • Criteria: • Height of the ceiling (impact on the needful flux). • Surface of the area (impact on nb of luminaires to be installed).

  33. What type of product to be used depending on the need: • Escape Route Luminance to provide the right luminous flux at the ground level Visibility distance to indicate efficiently the route of escape • Criteria: • Height of the ceiling (Flux of the product). • Dimension of the screen (impact on nb of luminaires to be installed).

  34. EN1838: Application rules 1 lux 1 lux min. on Floor level Escape Route Transverse Spacing Between Luminaires Transverse Spacingto Wall Distance between E.Lighting blocks • Influent parameters • Safety Lighting • It depends of the luminaire (shape, composition, flux…) • Location of the product • Height over the floor, the mounting: wall, ceiling, axes positioning • The level of light required • 1 lux, 0.5 lux, 15 lux…

  35. EN1838: Application rules Distance between E.Lighting blocks • Spacing Tables • For each products exits a table which defines whether fittings are needed in addition to those required for the points of emphasis.

  36. EN Standard EN 50172:rules for maintenances

  37. Maintenance rules EN 50172 • EN 50172 Periodic Maintenance & test records Series of procedures to keep the safety lighting system working efficiently • Daily • Make a daily check of the energy source power supply indicators. • Monthly • Make a test of the luminaires, simulating failure of the standard power supply for enough time to allow verification of the start-up of the lighting devices and signs. • Annually • Make a duration test on each lighting and sign luminairessimulating loss in standard power supply for sufficient time. System failures Should have be recorded on a register
