Empowering Indigenous Youth: Upholding Children's Rights and Cultural Identity

This initiative focuses on empowering Indigenous youth through promoting healthy relationships, experiences, and opportunities to strengthen their social, psychological, and spiritual anchoring. By implementing the 40 Developmental Assets, both external and internal, the program aims to protect and promote the rights of children while respecting and preserving their cultural identity. The strategies for action include eradicating poverty, ending discrimination, supporting families and communities, ensuring access to quality education, and promoting children's participation rights. Together, let's amplify the voices and rights of Indigenous youth.

Our Indigenous Voice They took your soul and voice, your right to self-expression, dignity and personhood.They stole my skin, my language, my village, my true spiritual connection,and with it my culture. They took our dignity, our identity, our personhood.They did not take my voice and indigenous soul. I will return to the teachings, Our voice and indignation will be heard.I, we, are Ojibwa.

The 40 Developmental Assets • Two Types of Assets • External: Support, Empowerment, Boundaries & Expectations, Constructive Use of Time • Relationships, experiences and opportunities that young people experience in their families, schools, and communities • Internal: Commitment to Learning, Positive Values, Social Competencies, & Positive Identity • Functionally valued behaviors and choices

Strategies for Action • Eradicate poverty (Preamble & Article 4). • End all forms of discrimination (Article 2). • Ensure optimal functioning of ALL families and communities (Articles 19, 24, & 27) • Ensure access to a quality education (Articles 23, 28, & 29) • Develop mechanisms to enhance and promote ALL children’s right to participation (Articles 12-15)
