Why Have Sponsor Training? • Mandated training initial and annual • AF Sponsorship Program • AFI 36-3009, para 3.10.2.6 • First-time sponsors and those who have not been trained as a sponsor during the past year must receive sponsorship training. This training is provided by the A&FRC staff. • Enhances sponsor effectiveness • Increases awareness of agencies and services • Newcomers deserve our best efforts • “First impressions are lasting impressions.”

  3. What is a Sponsor? • A representative of your Commander • Point of contact • Someone on the “other side” • Provides a link to Barksdale and the community • Friendly face

  4. Why are Sponsors Important? A good sponsor can: • Reduce relocation stress • Improve morale • Ease culture shock • Improve productivity • Cultivate friendships • Assure mission readiness

  5. What to Do? • Be a good communicator • Make contact and stay in contact with newcomer • Be concerned • Care about his/her feelings and needs • Be creative • Think of ways to help them learn about the area and begin to feel welcome

  6. What to Do? • Know your resources • Sponsor’s Guidebook • Basic Sponsor Package • All handouts • Begin your Sponsor Checklist • Call newcomer within 2 days of your assignment as sponsor • Complete the Newcomer Needs Assessment • Send a welcome letter and sponsor package within 5 days

Reminders • For newcomers with children • Inform about Child Care for PCS • Explain about the Loan Locker and Airman’s Attic • Remind him/her to check with the Housing Office prior to signing any rental or purchase agreement • Emphasize attendance at the Right Start Welcoming Event • Encourage spouses to attend

  10. Arrival • Meet the newcomer upon arrival • Provide a tour of the base and local area • Point out the Airman &Family Readiness Center • Assist with transportation, if needed • You DO NOT need to be their taxi service • Assist with in processing • Introduce to coworkers

  12. Continue with Training Being a good sponsor is the best first impression you’ll every make! Ensure you access the “Sponsor Certificate of Completion,” fill out, sign & date and handcarry a copy to your Unit INTRO Monitor & the Airman & Family Readiness Center.
