  3. Level 2 Verification Objectives • correct formatting algorithm • correct surface classification • products being in the expected range • products in accordance with common rules • no visual artefacts • meaningful product confidence flags

  4. L2 Verification General Strategy

  5. Geophysical Validation BASED ON PROPOSALS IN ANSWER TO AO PRIVILEGE: EARLY ACCES TO MERIS PRODUCTS RESPONSABILITIES: GATHERING OF VALIDATION DATA CRITICAL REVIEW OF PRODUCTS

  7. Overview MARINE PRODUCTS: 12 PROPOSALS LAND PRODUCTS: 4 PROPOSALS CLOUD AND WATER VAPOUR PRODUCTS: 3 PROPOSALS

  8. Marine Products ALGAL PIGMENT ** YELLOW SUBSTANCE ** SUSPENDED MATTER ** AEROSOL OPTICAL THICKNESS * AEROSOL SPECTRAL DEPENDANCE * FLAGS ** WATER-LEAVING REFLECTANCES * * REFERENCE MODEL EXISTS ** REFERENCE MODEL AND MEASUREMENT PROTOCOLS EXIST

  9. Marine Products THE INVESTIGATORS AGREE TO TAKE PART IN INTERCALIBRATION OF OPTICAL SENSORS INTERVALIDATION OF MEASUREMENT METHODS. AGREE TO FOLLOW MEASUREMENT PROTOCOLS REFERENCE MODEL

  10. Marine Products

  11. Land Products VALIDABLE PRODUCTS: SURFACE PRESSURE DDV FLAG AEROSOL OPTICAL THICKNESS ABOVE DDV AEROSOL SPECTRAL SLOPE ABOVE DDV

  12. Land Products VALIDATION OF SURFACE PRESSURE: Pressure algorithm uses ratio of radiance in O2 absorption band at 760 nm and reference at 753.75 nm => sensitivity to spectral registration VALIDATION ABOVE BRIGHT DESERT SITES WITH KNOWN SURFACE PRESSURE

  13. Land Products VALIDATION OF AEROSOL PROPERTIES: Use data from AERONET network and from SCHIAMACHY VALIDATION OF DDV CLASSIFICATION: Stability of statistics of DDV patches with variation of ARVI threshold

  14. Water Vapour Products WATER VAPOUR OVER WATER: MWR on board ENVISAT WATER VAPOUR OVER LAND AND CLOUDS: GPS, radiosoundings

  15. Cloud Products CLOUD OPTICAL THICKNESS: Validate radiative transfer code using : Measurement from aircraft of top-of-cloud radiances with CASI with MERIS band configuration. Measurement of in-situ cloud droplet sizes and concentrations using in-cloud flying aircraft

  16. Cloud Products CLOUD TOP PRESSURE Dedicated MERIS campaigns with reference bands outside O2 absorption bands (753.75 nm, 775 nm) and three 2.5 nm-wide channels at 760, 762.5, 765 nm. Dedicated aircraft flights with OVID spectrometer and CASI imaging spectrometer.
