  1. Mechanics K.I.S.S KEEP IT SENSIBLE & SIMPLE

  2. What is Mechanics? • Effective writing requires a sound understanding of the mechanics of good writing. A useful analogy in thinking about the mechanics of writingis that of driving a car. • The various components of the car (or parts of speech in writing), and how they function together (the rules of grammar), and • What is needed to keep the car moving along, stopping and starting in the right places, and pausing whenever it is necessary (punctuation).

  3. Sentence Structure • A sentencecontains a verb and a subject. A sentence is a complete idea in itself. • Remember to avoid run-ons, comma-splices, and fused sentences. • Keep all sentences simple and sensible. (K.I.S.S)

  4. How can we K.I.S.S it? • Replace several vague words with more powerful and specific words. Work this out: Wordy: Suzie believed but could not confirm that Billy had feelings of affection for her. (14 words) Simple & Sensible: Suzie assumed that Billy adored her. (6 words)

  5. K.I.S.S it! • Wordy: Working as a pupil under a someone who develops photos was an experience that really helped me learn a lot. (20 words) • Sensible & Simple: Working as a photo technician's apprentice was an educational experience. (10 words)

  6. Question every word in a sentence! • Check every word to make sure that it is providing something important and unique to a sentence. • If words are dead weight, they can be deleted or replaced. Wordy: The teacher demonstrated some of the various ways and methods for cutting words from my essay that I had written for class. (22 words) KISSED: The teacher demonstrated methods for cutting words from my essay. (10 words)

  7. Combine Sentences • Some information does not require a full sentence, and can easily be inserted into another sentence without losing any of its value. Wordy: Ludwig's castles are an astounding marriage of beauty and madness. By his death, he had commissioned three castles. (18 words) KISSED: Ludwig's three castles are an astounding marriage of beauty and madness. (11 words)

  8. ACTIVE VOICE • In a sentence using active voice, the subject of the sentence performs the action expressed in the verb. Passive: The book is being read by the class. Active: The class is reading the book. Passive: Mistakes were made. Active: We made mistakes.
