  2. Success Criteria – Band 4 of 5 • ALL: explain and analyse how you and others use and adapt spoken language for specific purposes • MOST: Analyse some issues arising from public attitudes to spoken language varieties. • SOME: Analyse and reflect on features found in some spoken language data

Homework activity • Using the information and learning that you gain from today and tomorrow’s lesson write a mini-essay (two pages of A4 minimum) answering the question ‘How and why does slang change over time?’ Do not forget to PEE and ensure you answer each of the following questions in full. • 1) What is the purpose of slang, and provide examples? • 2)What are the positive points of using slang? • 3) What are the negative points of using slang? • 4) How and why does slang change over time?

  4. Starter Activity:In your groups of four create a mind map of words from your homework. Everyone must write down the words and meanings (where possible) on your own sheets.You have 8 minutes to get all the information down.

  5. 5 minutes - Reviewing our starter:What slang words and their meanings were you unfamiliar with before today’s lesson?Which words do you like? Why?Which words do you not like? Why?Who would your interviewees use these words with?Why do your interviewees not use certain words anymore?

  6. What is your personal talk – ‘Under 21’ section? What do you say when you really like something? What do you say to get someone’s attention What do you say when you think something is rubbish? What do you say when you think someone is attractive? What words do you say frequently e.g. Innit?

  7. That is so fetch. Discuss with your group of four: Can slang be invented? Who can invent it? Have you ever invented slang that has caught on? If people don’t invent slang, how does it come about?

  12. Brainstorming activity - Plenary • In your groups, write your answers to the question given to you. The paper will then be passed from group to group until each group has answered each question. Each group will have 1 minute each. 3. What are the negative points of using slang? 11. What is the purpose of slang? 4. Why does slang change over time? 2. What are the positive points of using slang?

  13. Extension Task: Answer all of the following questions in your workbook. Use full sentences and explain yourself clearly and use examples. What makes something “dictionary-worthy”? Why don’t we normally consider slang in this category? What does the fact that so many of these words come from technological advances say about our culture? How does language – specifically slang – reflect culture (or help define counterculture)? What role does language play in shaping culture or creating subgroups within cultures?
