2. Welcome! Your presence here indicates your interest in correctly advising and helping your students…so thank you!
A couple of examples of students who get the “You’re not graduating after all” letter at the beginning of their last semester.
My advisor never told me I had to take Business Cal!!
My advisor never told me that I had to take Strategic!!
What are Junior/Senior hours!!
3. What if……… Most of the advising is relatively simple and straightforward, as you’ll see in the upcoming slides.
But there are always students who have special circumstances—went to several other schools, dropped out and returned several times, etc.
So the easiest thing for you and the best thing for your advisees is probably to carefully learn the basic advising rules for Gen Ed and the CoB core and your department. Then, for those few students with exceptional circumstances, maybe Dr. Washam or I can help.

Degree Plans
5. Degree Plans Has to be from the past seven years (they expire in August each year)
Oldest degree plan you can use now: 2003-2004 (expires August 2009)
The student had to attend a college that year (it doesn’t matter if they withdrew that year or if they failed all of their classes that year…they can still be on that degree plan.)
6. Business Degree Requirements
7. Classes to be taken during first 45 hours: ENG 1003 English Comp I
ENG 1013 English Comp II
Either MATH 1023 College Algebra or MATH 2143 Business Calculus
Either PHIL 1103 Intro to Philosophy, PHIL 1503 Logic & Practical Reasoning, or (SCOM 1203 Oral Communication-Core Requirement)
You should also STRONGLY recommend they take MATH 2143 Business Calculus during sometime during their first 60 hours
8. C’s or Better Must make a C or better in:
MATH 2143 Business Calculus
ENG 1003 English Comp I
ENG 1013 English Comp II
ACCT 2033 Intro to Financial Acct (ACCT 2033)
CIT 1503 Microcomputer Apps (or CS 1013) double check to make sure that CS 1013 is correct
9. Anthropology or Sociology Every COB student must complete either ANTH 2233 Cultural Anthropology OR SOC 2213 Intro to Sociology
Even if they transfer in an Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, & Associate of Arts in Teaching degree from an Arkansas public institution, they still need to meet this requirement.
10. Enhancement What is an enhancement?
Any general education course not previously taken to satisfy general education requirements will count as their enhancement (can be MATH 1023 College Algebra because we require MATH 2143 Business Calculus)
How do I know if a student needs an enhancement?
Advisors can view holds under Advisors’ Menu in Self Service
All students need at least one enhancement, if they are on a 2008-2009 degree plan or older!
11. Important Core Classes There are five core classes a student must complete before they start taking upper level business classes:
ACCT 2033 Intro to Financial Acct (Acct I)
ACCT 2133 Intro to Mangerial Acct (Acct II)
Prereq for Mang Acct: ACCT 2033 with C or better
ECON 2313 Prin of Macroeconomics
ECON 2323 Prin of Microeconomics
ECON 2113 Business Statistics
Prereqs for Stats: MATH 1023 or MATH 2143 and CIT 1503 or CS 1013)
12. 45/54 Hours Rule 45 junior/senior level credit hours should be completed after the student has earned 54 credit hours
Look at EHRS (hours earned) not AHRS (hours attempted)
Can count classes in the semester in which 54 hours are earned
Only count classes passed
Just advise students not to take upper level courses until they have earned 54 hours
13. At Least 50% Rule At least 50% of Business requirements must be completed at ASU-Jonesboro
Examine business core and major classes. At least half of those classes should be taken from ASU-J.
14. 32 Residence Hours Minimum of 32 credit hours must be ASU-Jonesboro residence hours
15. 57 Hours Rule Minimum of 57 hours must come from a four-year institution or from ASU-Beebe, ASU-Mt. Home, EACC, MSCC, or ANC. ( MOUs on file)
Watch for students from Black River Technical College, ASU-Newport (??), and Three Rivers Community College; their hours DO NOT count towards this rule.
16. Last 30 of 36 Hours Must complete 30 of last 36 hours in courses offered by ASU-Jonesboro
Maximum of 6 credit hours of the last 36 can be taken at another institution other than ASU Systems schools
17. 25% Rule/Credit by Examination Credit by Examination, correspondence, military science, & USAFI is not to exceed 25%
Maximum of 30 semester hours can be credit by examination
18. 126 Hours Rule Must complete correct number of hours presented for degree
At least 126 hours total
International Business 130 hours total
Business Technology degree 143 hours total
Watch closely for classes taken twice
19. GPA Requirements Students need a 2.25 in the major, core, overall, and institutional
OR they can have all C’s or better
CIT majors are required to have all C’s or better in major classes
20. GPA Recompute Rule A student can have up to 18 hours of D’s and F’s recomputed in their GPA.
If a student made a D or an F in a class, they can retake it and have the better grade recomputed in their GPA.
It does not matter when the student took the class, whether it be in their first semester or the senior year.
21. Reminders for CIT Advisors Be careful when counting upper-level credits (some of the CIT major requirements are NOT upper-level)
22. Advising
23. Your Advisees As a CoB faculty member, you are required to serve as an academic advisor to students that are majoring in your area.
Each semester, there will be registration holds on your advisees’ accounts. They will not be able to register online until they meet with you and you approve their schedule for the upcoming semester.
During advising time, they will come to the Student Services Center to check out their folders. They will bring their folders with them when they come meet with you to be advised.
The folders will have all documents for that student
Degree plan
Copies of transfer work
Copies of approval forms
24. Advising, Cont. You will make sure what they plan on taking the next semester are classes they need, that they have the prerequisites for those classes, etc.
Once you have approved their schedule, you will send the electronic advising form to the departmental secretary so they can lift the students’ advising holds.
Once the holds are lifted, the students will register themselves for classes online.
Advising/registration starts in late March for the summer and fall semesters, and it starts in early November for the spring semester.
Use the comments section on the Advising Record to help yourself and your students remember the advice you gave. For example, I always put that I “reminded the student to complete the Asterisk”
Keep in mind that the Advising Record is our “proof” that they were advised correctly
25. To view your advisees’ info… Log into Self-Service Banner
Under the Faculty Services tab, click on Student Information Menu
Then click on desired option
Select the current term
