  1. Hints from Heloise • Use the Queen’s English, and spell korrectlykorrectlie correctly (esp. hormones!) • Proof read for typos, missing words, “i” instead of “I”, etc • Avoid vague language, e g. “testosterone fluctuates through the cycle” or “I want to identify how it relates to ..” or “While most of it is produced ..” or “If it was decreased …” • Avoid common language/anthropomorphims, e.g. “protein hormone culprits” • Avoid hanging sentences that don’t relate to anything • “until 1993 by Colbern et al. Although …” always include year: “Colbern et al. (1993)” • “In a paper published in June 2009 Riddick et al. stated”; should read “Riddick et al. (2009) stated …”

  2. “Richard Behringer and colleagues performed a study” should read “Behringer et al. (1988) performed …” • no initials in text citation, e.g. “Behringer U. (1998) showed that” • no extraneous info in references, e.g. “PhD, Dphil”, or “and colleagues” (give all authors names in Bibliography) • upper case not needed for journal titles; use lower case throughout • “et al.” = abbreviation `et alii' (masculine plural) or `et aliae' (feminine plural) so it needs a period • Genus names are capitalised, species names are lower case, e.g. Crocuta crocuta, Drosophila • Clear title? • Clear statement of objectives/plans/structure? “ In this paper I will describe X. Specifically, I will first review Y and then I will describe the background to Z. Next I will compare A and B. Finally, I will integrate and suggest some future directions for research ”
