    2. Subway stations Commuter students at NYU Applying student development theory NYU’s holistic commuter services model Questions Bringing it back to your campus

    3. Stand Clear of the Closing Doors, Please! NYU Undergraduate Enrollment: ~19,500 Undergraduate off-campus students: ~8,800 (45%) Spring 2007: NYU Commuter Student Services and Office of Research and Assessment surveyed approximately 1,000 commuter students Identified four challenges that affect commuter students Developed a holistic model of programs and services to address these challenges. Summer 2007: Implementation of this program began

    4. Commuter students identified challenges at NYU Disconnection from student life Scheduling conflicts Mass transportation issues Safety

    5. Disconnection from student life Respondents seemed to be most satisfied with their academic experience (77% satisfied/highly satisfied), extracurricular activities (63%) and overall experience at NYU (66% satisfied/highly satisfied). However, when it comes to their satisfaction with community (59%), and connection to NYU (34%) they appear to be less satisfied with their experience. The factors that most often prevented respondents from being more involved were their commute (22%), the times which programs are held (21%), studying (21%) and work (17%).

    6. Scheduling Conflicts Commuters are often on campus Monday-Friday between the hours of 9am-7pm Most students hold between 0 (20%), 1 (53%) or 2 (24%) jobs, with most being part-time (on- or off-campus) and internships.

    7. Mass Transportation Issues The most common means of transportation includes the subway, walking, bus or commuter rail For a one-way commute, the majority of respondents spend an hour or less commuting (65%), while 30% spend between 1-2 hours each way, and 5% commuting for more than two hours each way

    8. Safety Overall students feel safe traveling to and from NYU (74%) However, they also made suggestions such as providing shuttles to subway stations and major transportation hubs and outer boroughs (31%) and increasing the visibility of Public Safety officers on the streets between NYU and subway stations (23%) during the late night hours

    9. Student Development Theory Astin’s Theory of Student Involvement Maslow Theory of Hierarchy First Six Weeks Model

    10. NYU’s holistic commuter services model Connecting first year students to the larger NYU community Increase services for all commuters Improve opportunities for commuter student involvement

    11. Connecting first year students to the larger NYU community Commuter Preview Day Double the size of the Commuter Assistant (CA) program Change the focus of the CA program from programming towards mentoring and one-on-one interactions with intense focus on the first six weeks

    12. Commuter Preview Day On-campus event for commuters prior to all university orientation Meet upperclassmen and incoming commuter students Commuter friendly campus tour Collaborated with undergraduate colleges

    13. Commuter Assistant Program The Commuter Assistant (CA) program consists of twenty CAs, who are responsible for mentoring and sharing information with first-year students. CA’s duties include: Call, e-mail, and meet face-to-face with approximately 30 students regularly Weekly office hours Weekly information updates Small events intended to foster personal interaction between commuters

    14. Increase Services for all NYU Commuters Weekly HTML email to 10,000 commuter students Increased outreach to commuter parents Making lockers available Free weekly lunches Free printing stations Discount hotel rates during final

    15. Commuter Weekly Update

    16. Improve opportunities for commuter student involvement Discoveries, a faculty-commuter student engagement program Formation of the Off Campus Student Council, an advocacy organization for commuter students Expanding programming by the Commuter Circle, a commuter programming board
