  1. Generating Ideas V: Looking Deeper at our Texts Objective: To analyze the ways in which authors craft their stories to help readers determine the real meaning behind them C.C.S.S.: W8.9, SL8.1

  2. There is a BIGGER message Authors don’t come out and tell the reader what the story is about and message/lesson they want their readers to learn For example at the end of Fly Away Home by Eve Bunting ends with the father and son still homeless, living in the airport, and wanting a better life. Why would this be done intentionally? Encourages the reader to find a bigger idea than just the story of a homeless father and son.

  3. Finding Clues to Determine Larger Message Clues (p.16) Symbolism of the bird and flying out Hope of being able to leave one day General optimism of Andrew **Thought process: think about what the story teaches you about your life or the world around you.** Possible Bigger Meaning Never give up, no matter how hard your situation might be. There is always hope for a better tomorrow.

  4. Consider another one… (p.22-29) Work with your partner to consider another message that Bunting might want the readers to take with them after reading Fly Away Home. Listen as I read about the Medinas and their relationship with Andrew & his dad. Turn and Talk with your partner to discuss another message. It is not directly in the text, you need to find clues to determine the lesson.

  5. Evaluation & Homework EVALUATION: Rate yourself a 1-4 for how well this lesson (notes, activity, information learned) made sense to you HOMEWORK: Determine the bigger message of 3 of the 7 stories from “What’s It Really About?”
