Grammar: Compound Sentences Take notes on pg. 30 under warm-up to p. 31 Remember (don’t copy): A compound sentence contains two or more independent clauses and no subordinate clauses The independent clauses are usually joined by a comma and a coordinating conjunction: and, but, for, nor, or, so, or yet
Compound Sentences: COPY Examples: According to legend, Betsy Ross S made our first flag, but little evidence supports V S V this claim. Two independent clauses joined by the conjunction “but”
continued… COPY Example: The whistle blew, the drums rolled, S V S V and the crowd cheered. S V Three independent clauses, the last two joined by the conjunction “and”
Difference between simple sentences and compound sentence COPY Simple sentence: Alberto and Jared increased their speed and S S V passed the other runners. V (compound subject and compound verb) Compound sentence: Alberto led for half the distance, and then S V Jared took the lead. S V (two independent clauses)
Note- COPY The independent clauses in a compound sentence may also be joined by a semicolon, a conjuctive adverb, and a comma.
