  1. 8.2 Sentence and Sentence Fragments Objective: -To identify subjects and predicates and to recognize complete sentences -To identify and use strategies for correcting sentence fragments -To use subjects and predicates correctly to form compete sentences

  2. Every sentence has two parts. • Subject- names who or what the sentence is about. • Predicate- tells what the subject does or has -describes what the subject is like or is -Also known as the verb

  3. Example • Emily Dickinson wrote books. Subject Predicate (who) (what she did) I eat apples. She runs a race. The teacher is smart.

  4. Every sentence must have a subject and a predicate. • Must also express a complete thought. • ***If a sentence does not have a sub or pred and doesn’t express a complete thought, it is a Sentence Fragment.

  5. Sentence Fragment • Sentence Fragment-does not express a complete thought -could be missing a subject, predicate, or both Ex: Found a ball The bright students Ran a race About history in the sunlight

  6. Fragments: Missing Subject: went to the store. is traveling very far. Missing Predicate: The bright sun Operations Missing Both: (most are prep. phrases) about history into the horizon
