Ancient Greece is located in modern day European Union. Macedonian is to the Northeast and Albania is to the North west. To it’s south is the Mediterranean Sea. It has many islands and sea side resorts and is a popular tourist destination. Some important cities of ancient Greece are Delphi, Athens, Corinth, and Olympia. The ancient Greek period spans from 2700 BC to 150 BC. These periods are divided up into the Bronze Age, the Dark Age, the Classical Period and the Hellenistic Period. Location/ Timeline
Greek Creation Stories are called “cosmogony”, or “how everything came into being.” Hesiod wrote the first Greek creation stories. First there was a void called “Chaos”. Earth or “gaia” came out of this. From that came the “TITANS” or the lesser Gods. Titans were made up of six males and six females. Some important Gods are Zeus – king of Gods Poseidon – earth shaker Hades – king of the dead Hera – queen of heaven Hestia – the quiet one – goddess of the home Apollo – lord of the bow, god of prophesy Aphroditie – Goddess of love Ares, Athena, Artemis Titans and Gods
Greek temple design was a chance for the Greeks to show the world how wealthy and talented they were. The statue of Zeus in the Temple of Olympia and the and the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus even made it into the SEVEN WONDERS OF THE WORLD. Only rubble and a few bases of columns are left of some of these buildings but they are still considered to be the best example of their kind. Building a temple was paid by the public and the rich. They were very expensive. The Parthenon cost 469 silver talents. To put that in context, one giant war ship cost one silver talent. The Parthenon took 15 years to build and thousands of workmen. Railway - just a rutway with carts around 600 BC Steam Engine – invented by Hero of Alexandira in AD 10. A ball in pivot over a caldron. Vending Machines – Hero of Alexandria made a machine that dispensed holy water by dropping a coin into it. Writing – first Greek letters used around 750 BC History – The Greeks were the first to write about history Comedy – The Greeks were the first to make plays that were comedies. Money – first coins used in 600 BC which replaced bartering. Later, they developed paper money. Musical Notes - at 300 BC the Greeks developed 2 types of musical notes but not the same as modern notes. Democracy – Some people think other places had democracies first but became the inspiration for western democracies after it Greek Inventions
Greek philosophy tries to explain where everything comes from, what is the world made of, what happens when you die. They wanted to explain why things are through logic rather then excepting religious explanations. Thales believed that water was in all things and the source of all things. He called this the “ First Principal of Life”. Pythagoras was famous for mathematical calculations including the Pythagorean theorem. Socrates never wrote anything down but his words were written by others. He was interested in why people act the way they do. He is the inventor of “moral philosophy.”. His method is famous because of the way he asked questions . He said “all that I know is that I know nothing”. Plato founded a school that was around for 1000 years until the byzantine empire in 529 AD Philosophers and Thinkers
Sculpture – marble and bronze statues were made. Greek statues were free standing instead of on a wall. The Greek sculptures were naked. Egyptian sculpture was normally people with cloths on. Many of the figures were goddess figures. Greeks thought it was important for the sculpture to look very realistic. Vases were painted with beautiful art also. Jewelry was important and the Greeks made beautiful necklaces, rings, earrings were popular in the 5th century BC. ART
