What am I and what do I look like… • I’m a pedal-driven, human powered, single-track vehicle, having two wheels attached to a frame, one behind the other. My information for this slide is from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bicycle
I was invented by… • I was invented by Baron von Drais. He made the first version of me but you had to walk me around. MacMillan velocipede was the first that was used with feet off the ground.
My Inventor’s History • Baron von Drais was born and raised in Karlsruhe, Germany on April 29th 1785. • Kirkpatrick MacMillan was born and raised in Coathill, near Dumfries, Scotland on September 2nd 1812.
How did they invent me….. How did they invent me you ask. Baron von Drais built me by invented a walking machine that would help him get around the royal gardens faster: two same-size in-line wheels, the front one steerable, mounted in a frame which you straddled. The device was propelled by pushing your feet against the ground, thus rolling yourself and the device forward in a sort of gliding walk. The machine became known as the Draisienne or hobby horse. It was made entirely of wood. This enjoyed a short lived popularity as a fad, not being practical for transportation in any other place than a well maintained pathway such as in a park or garden. http://www.pedalinghistory.com/PHhistory.html
