NAVIGATION LIGHTS AdaptedfromSkračić,T., „Waypoint”
Evenifwehavenotplannedit, wemaysoonfindthatwe are sailingafterdark, perhapsbecauseof a failingwind – or a failedengine. Sowehave to beabletocope. But navigation at night is notdifficult. Andin some waysit is easierthanbydaybecauselightscanbeidentifiedat a distance bytheirflashes.
Infactit is saidthatthebest time to reachportafteranoffshorepassage is at dawn. Wehavebeenable to identifythecoastby a light or lightsinthedarkhours, but wehavedaylight to findourwayintoharbour. Thehardest time afterdarkcanbewhenwe are inbusyareaslike Rijeka or Split ports or MaknareStraits. • Withthelightsashore, thelightsofships, andtheflashinglightsofnumerouslighthouses or buoys, itcan look ratherpuzzlingandchallenging. • Yet, ifwe are familiarwiththechart, navigationlightsandcollisionregulations, weshallbeable to findourwayandmakeournavigationsafeandeasy– evenifthehorizonlookslikeChamps-Elysées.
